This project started in the 80 Series side because a buddy broke his clamshell after one too many knees slamming into it. I'm starting with the 60s because I'm selfish and I want one for my 60 first before I adjust and make one for the 80s as well :flipoff2:

This is going to be a steel replacement for the plastic steering column clamshell. I am planning on security and accessory mounting options and I'm opening this up to scrutiny because I need input for what you folks would like to see as far as your needs.

The first pics are what the current design looks like. The last pics are what the old clamshell and new design look like in the same space. Nothing is set in stone.

'Bout ruddy time.

You might make money on this though, are you sure it's up your alley?

;-)

Saw on your ig page. Didn't know I wanted an aftermarket clamshell, but I definitely do.

I hate you and your 3d scanner :flipoff2:

I might have overlooked this fact simply because I’m in awe of your sense of necessity coupled with detailed but practice design, but for as long as I can remember I’ve always wondered the cryptic meaning behind your moniker... NLXTACY? Is it because the meaning is so simplistic it obscures the obvious? In any event, thanx once again for thinking of us 60’s guys! Feel free to label me a dunce!

i posted on the 80s page but thought i’d throw it in here too as it’s actually a 62 i’m working on . i’d like to add a slip ring for powered accessories to my steering wheel (wheel heater specifically). the original clam shell doesn’t have enough clearance. maybe you could invent something in your new clan shell!

Well, the issue is I’d either have to make a set back and/or increase the OD to accommodate. Either way it would be a one off because I don’t picture anyone else really utilizing it. I’ll give it some thought.

fair enough. i think there’s room behind the steering wheel with out setting it back but not enough width between the wheel and the moulding by the signal lever. you may be right though about desire. probably not enough market. just wanted to throw the idea out there to see

It’s funny, I JUST posted on FB that I don’t do much 60 stuff due to lack of demand. Yet here I am 🙄

This project has been inching forward in the background. This is the #clamshell for the 60 Series Cruisers that has been redesigned one more time but this time simplifying the machining and installation process. The design will incorporate the emergency button mod (from gen1 4Runners) and a few other features. Ultimately I’m moving forward on this because my own 60 needs one but mostly because the 80 series is in desperate need of a better design and this is damn close as it is.

So if there are any further features you’d like to see for the 60 or 80 clamshell, speak now! 😉

Can you make it an option to have the hazard button mod or not? Would rather not have an extra piece missing because I haven't done that mod.
