I am trying to get an idea how much it would cost to do the timing belt/ water pump service on a 1998-2002 LC or LX. Parts and labor separately. Any ballparks based on members experiences?

Also, I understand there is a very good (and well know on this forum) mechanic shop in Fredericksburg, Virginia that specializes in LC and LX. Can someone pls point me to the name / contact of this shop? Thanks in advance.

Iron pig off road.

My Toyota dealer in Houston-TX quoted $350 timing belt & $150 for a water pump labor only. Parts was around $700. I end up doing it myself...fairly straight forward job. Fan bracket two lower screws was the hardest part. This is for a 2005 LC.

I had the it done on a previous 03 by an indy Toyota specialist and it was much less than the previous two quotes. I cant remember how much exactly, but I want to say something like $600 total. Used Toyota parts and coolant. F the dealer.

Just did this on my 2000 Lexus GS400 (4.0 v8) It uses the exact same parts that the 4.7 motor does. I replaced everything WP, Serp belt, t-belt, t-stat all idlers and new pullys, coolant etc. Total for parts was right at $485 from C-Dan (except for coolant. Bought from local dealer but included in the $485) Labor was done by my Son (College student in Auto tech) so i have no $ on the labor.

I just paid $500 for parts and labor on my 2000 LC. My buddy owns a used car lot, so he had the dealer pricing on parts.

Labor was mine so it was priceless. I replaced belts, water pump, gaskets, every pulley and idler including fan bracket, both tensioners, thermostat, upper and lower radiator hoses, heater T's, and coolant. Parts total was $870, which included a 25% discount off list price. You're getting a large variance in costs from other posts because it depends a lot on what is replaced. I did everything because I only wanted to get in there once.

Exactly !!! A $500 job including labor isn't the same as all you did. Probably just the timing belt and waterpump.

I'll be doing the full list you mention, and maybe even drop a new radiator in at 180k miles. That's about when the radiator died on my 80-series, IIRC. Also, don't forget the cam and crank seals...

If you want to do some parts price research, here's a complete list of everything OEM. Of course the heater hose T fittings are not part of the T-belt work, but it sure is easier to replace them when all the coolant is drained anyway!

Timing belt 13568-09070

Serpentine belt 90916-02585

Water pump with gasket 16100-09201

Idler pulley 13503-0F010

I think you will get wild variations in price due to add-ons in addition to water pump and timing belt. I think around $1000 at a dealer for just timing belt and water pump. Maybe a $100-200 less at an independent shop due to labor difference. If you are going to have it done, might as well do it all (seals, idlers, tensioners, drive belt, etc.) while you are in there, but that will probably double the price if you pay a shop to do it. Ask them their maintenance labor dollar rate and flat rate hours for the job.... Then the rest is parts!

I just had mine done at my Local Yota dealer. Timing belt and water pump was $700. Usually they charge $820.

Yeah pretty sure mine was just TB and WP and coolant at the indy for around $600

Also, we shouldn't forget to change the coolant hose that goes to the oil cooler !!! No better time to do it than while this is all apart !

Old thread, but I thought I would post some updated prices. Had the water pump and timing belt service done on my '04 LC at an independent shop in Austin, TX at the 82K mark.

4 1/2 yrs later and with 135K on the Cruiser, I noticed a signs of a coolant leak when I crawled underneath. It wasn't dripping on the ground, but there was streaked coolant on the splash shield that showed it must be leaking while being driven.

Took off the engine cover and found signs of a coolant leak around the junction between the water inlet housing assembly O-ring and engine in the area above the water pump.

I have come to question some of the other work the independent shop did. Had two brake jobs in 5K miles and still had occasional pulsation (despite all new pads and rotors) until the brakes were redone a third time by a Toyota dealer. So I went to the dealership in Reno, NV to have the leak looked at.

They recommended removal, replacement and resealing of the O-ring junction. Since I already had 50K+ on the water pump and doubts about the possible quality of the prior work, I had them do a full water pump, timing belt and drive belt replacement service. Based on information on this forum, I also had the fan bracket replaced at the same time.

Cost was $710 in parts (fan bracket alone was $251.69) and $825 in labor. They participate in the Costco auto service program which provides a 15% discount on parts and labor, so the total pretax charge was $1305.

That didn't seem so bad since the independent shop charged me $1116 back in 2011 and that didn't include the fan bracket.

Although the Cruiser didn't seem to be making any unusual noises prior to this service, it is noticeably quieter under the hood while running now so perhaps the fan bearing was beginning to go.

With any luck, the water pump, timing belt and all associated seals (as well as the fan bracket) will be good for at least 90K more miles.

why is it necessary to replace water pump at the same time timing belt is replaced?

While not "necessary", it's advised as the the labor involved with removing componentry to perform the timing belt service is nearly identical to that which would be involved with replacing the water pump. Additionally, both are rather high-mileage service items. Meaning, when replacing one, if the other hadn't been done for 90k+ miles, it's advisable to do. Afterall, wouldn't you hate to have one or the other fail ~10k from having already had a mechanic in there? The cost of OEM water pump is typically just under $200.

This said, I recently had my timing belt and water pump replaced at a Lexus dealer for $332.70 in OEM parts and $731.40 in labor. Much more was done during this appointment bringing the total just at $3200 after a "16% off Recommended Services" discount I haggled the service shop to apply to the entire bill.

Full timing belt service (belt, water pump, tensioners, seals) averaged about $1300 from (6 different) independent shops in Houston. Shop around if you need a professional I paid a lot less after finding the right shop.

@keepit100 I just had my timing belt and water pump replaced last week in Bozeman by CA Auto. Chris used to work for Rising Sun and then opened his own shop. Rising Sun actually referred me to him because they were 3 weeks out for work I needed done last year.

Parts cost was $220 for pump and belt. He used OEM parts sourced from Ressler.
Labor was 5 hours and I think he charges $75 an hour. I did have him replace whatever he thought was needed while he was in there, as well as replace some parts not associated with the timing belt. Total cost was $1151, $511 of that in labor.

sweet! thanks for the lead. Ive heard good things about rising sun! quite a few people with 100's have recommended them to me. I just got my timing belt replaced a few weeks ago. I used the same guys who maintain all of our company vehicles and he replaced serp belt and fixed my catalytic converter heat shield rattles for only $150!! but...now im thinking maybe i should have had the water pump replaced while he was in there. and yes he used OEM serp belt. Anyways, thanks for chiming in! Lets hit a trail sometime when it warms up
