My recent aquistion has just arrived and the engine is making a ticking noise at start up, it goes away in 20 seconds or less and then stays away until the engine goes cold. According to the PO it has done this the entire time he has owned it (4 years) and thought that it was normal, he also said that the Toyota dealership had no issues with this noise. It does have a TRD supercharger on it and I wonder if that has anything to do with it. It is a 2000 with 98k on the clock. All services were just completed, timing & serpentine belt, water pump, fuel/oil/air filters, pcv, and the radiator were flushed all within the last 20 miles.

I find it unusual that a 100 series would make this type of noise at all. It sounds like a lifter has died, but if has been going for four years, not to mention that there's a supercharger attached to this motor, then I just don't know -any ideas?

Thanks,
John

Its because of the supercharger. You should remove the blower ASAP and send it to me, I'll give you a proper normal intake manifold.

LOL! That supercharger is a serious nice option, especially coming from the 80. That truck moves with a purpose. I can't believe they stopped making them for the 4.7L.

If the Suburu mechanics call it cold piston slap, what do the Toyota mechanics call it?

I believe they call it "Warped exhaust manifold" or something like that. Mine (2000 LC) does it too. It ticks when the exhaust escapes between the manifold and the engine until the steel heats up enough to seal the gap. Very common on this engine from what I have learned.

its a nasty sound.... blair (loud) can testify that my manifold has seen its better days. its constant clicking. im waiting for somebdoy to make some headers (if they do please tell me). I cant stand OEM manifolds.

Has anyone priced the repair for this through the stealership or Cdan parts plus your labor?

I believe mine was around 1200$ for the passenger side. It was a while ago though. I could be way off, or thinking of something else.

I do recall the mechanic stating the manifold was 200$ and labor was 800, then you have tax, an all that good stuff. My stealership is one of those 500+ car lots so they can charge anything and get away with it ( only yota dealership in the area)

I was quoted $1900 for both sides, parts and labor. I would like to find some headers that work.

It drive me nuts to have an exhaust leak like this on the 100. Has anyone gone down the road to fix it themselves?

This fairly common exhaust leak pertains only to early 100's. It has been said, at some time, maybe late 2002, Toyota improved the manifold. So, buying a new OEM manifold today should get you the improved part.

the pass side is not hard to do the drivers side will require loosening the engine mount and some jacking of the engine....do it your self

Found the thread and it was informative.

I am semi-happy that it is an exhaust leak and not a lifter problem. Parts should be easy to locate and through Dan, not that expensive. I will photograph the experience when the time comes.

Thanks for all of the help,
John

Do not use JB Weld, it does not work.

Yours being a 2000 it could very well be the exhaust tick, but I can tell you that my 2000 had the warped manifold and it sounded like an exhaust leak. My 2003 has an actual piston slap on colder days (less than 45 or so degrees). The colder it gets the more it sounds like a deisel, but as soon as the engine starts to warm up the slap is gone.

I've heard of a few others LC owners with the piston slap issue, although not many; the biggest amount of info on this is the Tundra forums.

So if it is the manifold congrats you have a fix... if it's the piston slap welcome to the club (albeit a small one).

So if it's piston slap, is there a fix? I have something similar I just started noticing. I assume this is not a good thing to let go on, but...
