Been a ton of threads about rebuilding. Some people have managed to find shops for a bare bones rebuild running $2k to $3k. You can easily spend $5k to $8k for a full on top to bottom rebuild. And you can spend $10k to $20k for some of the performance builds out there.

Just Google “Fj60 engine rebuild” or Toyota 2f engine rebuild and most of the results will point to mud posts.

try an old school engine place, usually not in the best part of town.

or

Mosley motors but there is a long wait

Engine rebuilding is not that hard. The reality is it’s mostly buying a bunch of parts, then paying a machine shop to do a bunch of work. And then some relatively simple reassembly. A few measurements for good measure but overall it’s less complicated than it might appear. That said if you don’t have tools or space or time then it’s probably better just to pay someone else…assuming you find a decent provider.

I love seeing threads of folks who have bought one of these trucks and then pay a shop to do all the work for them.

I would certainly recommend Martin Davidson Automotive , the new owner of the shop is young guy named, Kyle. He apprenticed under Martin and is really really good, and just as anal about all the details as Martin was.

The OP lists his/her location as VA, so I suspect he's looking for someone closer to home. Mosely Motors is in TN, TLC Performance is in OH, Martin Davidson Automotive is in Reseda, CA

@garfieldthecat had his motor rebuilt by Kyle recently. Maybe he can add a little.

It’s getting to the point that distances have ceased to matter when trying to get quality work for these trucks.

I’ll cross the country for good services.

Kyle is really good and provides a lot of support even after a rebuild. I've had a few issues pop up assembling the engine and Kyle has always been very considerate and accommodating to help me out. He's great to work with and doesn't turn his clients (past or potential) away. He does stay busy though, and does good work, so you may need patience if you have him rebuild your engine.

You don't have to send it across the country for a rebuild. There are machine shops locally that can help. I know one in zion cross roads area that can mic your crankshaft and if necessary bore out the cylinders. Also a guy in Fluvanna that does head work. PM me if you need help.

How do you know it needs a rebuild?
I don't. I'm buying a core whose condition is uncertain. running when removed, with about 250K miles. The engine in mine has 275K miles. It still runs ok.
