Hey Friends,

First time poster here. Just picked up my 05/85 FJ this weekend- drove about 6 hours away to get her and trailer her home. She could used some TLC, but she’s a 60 series wagon and she’s a beaut. She spent the first 21 years of her life down in Alabama and Georgia, so very little rust. Mostly stock. I’m pumped to join the club.

It’s had less than 5k put on it since the previous owner picked it up in 2007, and she’s sitting at 217k miles overall.

I got what I thought was a good deal because... it needs some wrenching.

The alternator was removed, as the PO was in the process of replacing when life took them in another direction.

The battery tray was also rusted through, so I’ve already ordered one of the stainless trays that I’ve read nothing but good things about.

I’ve done some work before, but I’m still a newb. My goal is to get to know this vehicle front and back. But I definitely want to make sure I’m putting everything back together where it needs to be. I’ve checked out the FSM, and have a general idea, and the forums here too. Just wanted to check with the experts before I do anything or miss anything. Any help would be much appreciated.

Pics below- thanks!

More pics. I believe I’m missing two short hoses (close up shot below).

1st pic, maybe the fender light? the ring terminal is a ground
2nd pic, are both for the stock alternator, the 1 you installed looks aftermarket??

Thanks- the PO has purchased the alternator. I haven’t installed it yet- thinking I might grab a reman oem alternator or something along those lines and keep that as a spare.

Thanks again for the help!

Just confirmed- rebuilt autozone alternator.

Emissions manual if you need to keep smog

Do you have emissions testing? If not, now is the time to read all you can about 'desmog' and get to it.

No emissions testing where I’m at- it’s definitely near the top on the to-do list. I appreciate it.

Desmog now (follow the threads on it) and it'll be a lot easier than trying to figure out what's working and what isn't on the smog crap.

Your best bet is to find someone to come by with a stockish (under the hood) 60 and compare what you've got to a running one.

Also, save all the smog stuff you remove. It can be very valuable to someone else or you down the road.

Thanks, that’s a good idea. I’ve been finding pics online but it would definitely help to see in person.

The only thing I’m truly stumped on is the connection in the first pic. I’ve got to grab a few bolts tomorrow, before the stainless tray arrives but I’m hoping to get it all in.

Thanks, I plan on it. I know there are some good write ups on it.

Solved- definitely a fender light as 3_Puppies suggested. Both my fender lights are just the reflective glass- they cant even be connected. So that connection just hangs on both sides.

If both of your plastic washer reservoirs are in good shape protect them with your life. They are very hard to find replacements for.

I had no idea. Thanks for the info- both are in really solid shape. The whole truck is, relatively speaking. Only problem is it really hasn’t gotten the love it needs in the past decade or so.

Thanks all- OEM alt just arrived, going to work on popping it in today. In the mean time, I’ve been doing some small work on the FJ- tuffy console, cleaning out the cab, wheels, etc.

My favorite upgrade so far simply has to be the new knob.
