As I previously posted, I need to replace my crankshaft and harmonic balancer on my 1976 2F engine due to some crankshaft damage (loose pulley). I would like to try to do a lot of this during Thanksgiving Break (Nov. 23-27th) and wanted to see if there was anyone out there who would be willing to help a me to pull the engine. Paul already volunteered to help if he is free, but I thought I would see if anyone else would be willing. Beer, food, etc would be provided to those willing to help. If this isn't going to work, my backup is to rebuild the front axle. I know this is a crappy job, but it would be helpful to have someone there who has done this before. As mentioned, beer/food would be provided. I am going to order the front axle rebuild kit from CCOT, but thought I would ask if anyone had suggestions for other things to have on hand for the rebuild.

Thanks in advance,

Ian

If you haven't ordered the axle kit from CCOT yet, STOP! Get the kit from Marlin Crawler. Real KOYO bearings. It looks like two of the three kits offered include his super-duper axle seal. I would call and see if his $99 kit does or not. The $49 and the $179 kits do.

I might be available to lend a hand one day.

Where was your advice with I bought the CCOT crap, then had to buy the extra stuff from Marlin after?

Listen to Jon.

I'll check into that seal, thanks for the advice, that's why I posted first before I bought anything!

for front axle rebuilds i can only speak of the good walkthroughs in the 80 tech section faq, and that is all i have done myself. it is messy but easy job... especially if you have the soup i did. if you do and are doing inner axle seals etc, i'd go for new diff fluid etc as well. so you'll need at min a good moly grease, i use the valvoline platinum stuff IIRC, and gear oil of your choice, i used plain ol whatever that met specs. lots of nitrile gloves and big tubs to clean parts in....

OK, now that we are giving advice on the worlds most messy job ... Where is Onur when we need him?

Lots of gloves. Put a box under the knuckle to catch all the nasty stuff that will fall out. Take the truck to a car wash and pressure wash the outside of the knuckle front, back, top, bottom. Working on these is bad enough without having to clean up the greasy sand that will also be on the outside.

It took John the better part of a Saturday to do the first side while I looked over his shoulder and then he tackled the other side by himself on the Sunday. This job is easy but very messy. Valvoline Paladium is the grease that he's referring to that was used in the knuckle.

The deal with the front axle is the work is not that hard. Just a lot of detail steps and plenty of mess. Lots of paper towels, gloves, and brake cleaner. The first time is at least a day. Onur has done plenty of them and I'm sure he is pretty fast. Seems the last time I did one it was about 4-5 hours of screwing around. I have axles seals coming from Marlin for the 4Runner. Veteran's Day weekend will be very messy.

Borrow the correct tool to install the seal.

oh yeah palladium, at least that kinda sounds like platinum, if you mumble them like i had to in my mind... lol.

I've got a quick and dirty R & R down to about 1 hour.

A good/complete job on a front axle replacing everything, cleaning hardware, painting everything, and reassemble I've got down to one full day.

If you want to pull your engine still I am down. I can offer up a day over break to get it out. Its your call if you want to do that or rebuild your front axle.

Having the proper tools makes things go pretty quick (along with experience.)

I'll be sitting in the director chair with pizza and Pepsi, making sure that all tools are being put away neatly after use and everyone is working in a safe but efficient manner. Oh, and I can read the torque values from FSM too.

Ahem.

gonna be gone during T-givin, but if you ever need an extra pair of hands another time i could show up. WARNING i have no mechanical skills worth mentioning but my dad use to let me put away the tools!

We can fix that. Ya gotta learn sometime, especially if you are going to drive old junk.

I like old junk, and if you guys have the patience Im willing to learn.

Paul-
The engine pull and repair are the priority, figured the axle rebuild would be the backup in case. Ordered the rebuild kit from Marlin so I might try for that at a later date. I am still trying to figure out the logistics of the engine pull as I have no garage which complicates things.

I am going to order the new seals and everything for the crankshaft replacement as soon as I figure out what I need. Any advice on what to have on hand and the best place to order it from? I got the $179 kit for the axle thanks to the advice of Pappy, figure while I am in there I might as well do it right.

Thanks to all who offered help, I will let everyone know the plan once I figure it out.

Ian

Una cosa mas, how much of the palladium grease should I need for the axle rebuild? I figured I could buy a bunch and at worst have extra on hand for the future.
