mine also has a rear main leak ! i have a 74 FJ40 with 430,029 miles on it...i think that might have alot to do with it... :) mine is more like a steady poring out :) when i have 10w40 in it during the spring...I put 20w50 plus a can of no-smoke in for the summer...then i have a small dripping...i dont have much rust underneath my rig...sometimes it does smell like burning oil...but i love the smell of burning oil in the morning :) when you guys get ya rigs up to 400,000 let me know how many leaks you have , i would like to do a comparison between the fj80's and fj40's of long term leaks and such :)

Both my '97s had the rear main seal replaced. Last one was $300, not worth a couple days under the truck plus parts.

Nope. For $300 you can't afford not to get it replaced, even if it aint leaking :D. Seems like the repair runs anywhere between $600 and $1000 for most places though. Not much parts to it ($15 tube of FIPG and the cost of the seal), it's all labor and plenty of it.

thank you all for your replies!
I probably just leave it as is. Seems too much work need to do.
Also i noticed a funny thing that i never met before. The oil pressure meter shows only 1/4 of overall when in idle. If i press the gas pedal in normal driving, the reading raises to be 3/4 of overall. When i starts the truck, the oil pressure meter just raises slowly instead of prompt jump. Is this just a normal toyota design like this?
Thanks!

replacing your pvc valve can make a difference with that.

My 80 has a definite rear main seal leak and the only way to fix it is to remove the gearbox + transfer to get at it (and get at the clutch which I reckon is behaving like a 'wet' clutch in mine as the oil leak is quite bad). I'm going through a litre of oil a week at the moment.

can't pull the gearbox, etc. myself and I reckon I'm looking at $1k at least if the clutch parts are replaced at the same time as the main seal.

Craig.
