Engine implant - Tundra or Diesel?

I am a purist. I wouldnt replace any engine with a non-toyota powerplant.

For the diesel, what about the 1VD-T from the 70 & 200 series? 4500 V8 turbo (or twin turbo from the 200) should have a ridiculous amount of force. The problem would be availability in the US i guess. I do think that the Cummins options turn the 80 into a real tractor, and is a great and practical option, I think outside Toyota it would be the only choice.

as for the V8, I think the 100 series 2UZ V8 would turn the 80 series into a rocket, with parts and engines readily available it would be easy to service.

I would do a 6BT with an NV4500. My buddy has one and I got to drive it. It is a BEAST. Tons of power and the new short shifter tower on the NV4500 makes it fun to drive. Here are some pics.

Slee already has this offering. 2UZ-FE dropped in looks like factory and everything works.

I think turbo charging the stock motor is still the best bet. Beats everything! Lol

There's you're next product offering. I'll offer up a roller delivered to your door, if you want to embark on.

Holy crap! I want.

I talked to Slee about the 2UZ-FE swap, and the ballpark cost is about $25k for the whole deal. DieselToys here in San Antonio can do a 1HD-FT 24V swap into an 80 for about the same price, but my concern there is that while they are able to source and import these engines from overseas, getting parts for them when something breaks would take a LONG time and be quite expensive, since everything would have to be shipped in from overseas. Going with a USDM engine results in easier and cheaper availability of both the engine and the parts.

I'm still on the fence about the 2UZ-FE vs. 4BT/6BT. Part of me would like to keep it all-Toyota, but those Cummins engines are just so damn good! I'm still researching, but will probably take a good hard look at a 6BT if it's feasible.

On second thought, maybe 4BT. 6BT is just too heavy and too much power for an 80's driveline and suspension.

Just to clarify, that cost is for a completely rebuilt 2UZ with all Toyota parts and a rebuild transmission from Toyota. As well as the transfer case rebuilt and complete stainless tig welded exhaust.

With motor swaps, you have to compare apples to apples. If you priced a Chevy e-rod complete new package you will see that it would probably be more.

How much is a 5.3 crate motor and the new reman transmission for the 5.3 swap?

About $7k for the Erod 5.3l and 4l60e. Granted the engine is brand new, not rebuilt. Also need the marks tcase adapter for whatever the going price is now so figure on $8500 for the big parts and $4k left for the little stuff and labor to come in at $12500 to do an Erod swap.

Still not really apples/apples.

Sorry, Christo, I should have been a bit more clear in my response. I was in no way trying to imply that your price for the swap was too high. Given the attention to detail, the custom fab that goes into it, all of the rebuild work, and the fact that it's basically a turn-key swap as far as the customer is concerned, it's a hell of a deal. I was just pointing out the pros and cons of the 2UZ swap vs. the 1HT swap, given that they can be done at about the same price point.

Big 'ol Chevy engine would be sweet, and you'd have enough coin left over to throw a turbo into your buddy's 80 so's you could drag race for fun.... :)
