thanks. looks like that is the heater vent flap control relay i guess.
can i ask if the box with “diagnosis” is the plugin for the OBD II? and also can be used to set timing?
also is that the “tuna can” under the air filter? what does it do?
i’m sort of hoping to get help on this but also because i think it could be helpful to others.
took me like 2 months of reading to finally figure out what a “bean can” was on a bmw airhead...

Diagnosis. That is the diagnosis port. Only way to retrieve ECU codes on OBDI wagons. Also used to jumper out the ECU when setting base timing.

The OBDII port is in the dash by your left knee with the fuse panel.

Tuna can is under your air cleaner. Size and shape of a tuna can. It traps lots of junk that falls out of the air cleaner/filter giddy up.

The abs relay is labeled though kn the eleventh set. Then there is the oil pressure sending unit, the dash oil pressure gauge gets its info from that.

An online parts diagram is really fun to stare at, seriously. Plus all this is covered so well here already.
Have you read the entire FAQ's yet?

Have you acquired a Factory Service Manual?

You really need to stop posting and just sit and read both the manual as well as stare at part schematics as Ed mentioned.

No one is going to do the leg work for you. We can show you how to fish, but you are going to have to make some attempts at learning what you are doing on your own as well.

Also, the FAQ at the top of the page: read each thread. Look at what has been discussed here on MUD for the past 15+ years.

hey beno.
sorry. trying to get up to speed. read the faq’s and linked threads a number of times. going through them again and printing more stuff out. waiting on fsm and going to sit down and print out the factory diagrams and put them in a binder (i did this on a motorcycle and it is helpful).
i was /hoping/ this kind of “under hood visual ID” would be helpful. it’s different for me to do it this way than studying fiche or fsm. MUCH more helpful.
also, for all i know someone could say “dude you are missing the fuse for the MAF and /this/ is why you are throwing those codes.”
i didn’t mean for it to seem slackass. i didn’t find anything similar elsewhere and think it could be helpful.
honestly i think it is easy to forget how hard it is to get a handle on something like this if you are new to mechanical. then you have to figure out how best to navigate a new site. make sure you are being straight up and respectful. find a good online fiche.
just trying to learn as much as i can and try to help others as i go along.
major apologies if it seems i am not working hard independent of posts or leaning too hard on the list.
goodwill,
jon

It's Thanksgiving. I generally come across the internet like a complete a$$hole as my wife so aptly reminded me this moring. So my apologies.... I've eaten a couple of edibles and my blood pressure has lowered a bit.

Here is some critical information in identifying and understanding parts and the assemblies you are dealing with.

Print them out and read them all; In fact, print them out, read them, then take them out to your truck with the hood up and identify everything in comparison to the documentation. There are some slight/subtle differences between the years and the truck, but in general, most North American market FZJ80 trucks are all pretty much quite similar.

These documents below are both pictorial and diagrammatic as well as normal textual descriptions. They are the Cliff's Notes of your truck.

Hope these help.

woah! thanks beno!

i’m working hard. i’ve got print outs that get read and then make their way into binders over here. then i go back and reread. i carry print outs of anything with me that needs to get done. that’s excluding the 20 pages of notes. reading threads now! anyway, i’ll pretty much grab anything anyone is willing to throw at me by way of intel.

if anything i can go a little hard at a challenge just because i know i have the time and i am not going to have this kind of time all the time. so i bum rush it basically.

if i offend anyone let me know and i’ll apologize. if i’m crashing the forum too much let me know and i’ll put myself in a timeout.

i know you guys put have put in a lot of free time and continue to do this. and i realize the new kid in class can seem way over-excited and basically a pain in the ass. i’m probably a pain in the ass when it comes to learning things anyway so it can compound things.

sorry for the TMI. just want to make sure i’m stepping in with the right foot.

goodwill,
jonathan

@jaymar was kind enough to alert me to this "ID parts thread": Master Thread P/Ns with Photos (Belts & Hoses)

i figured i could post some of the images i worked up from the thread @cahill was kind enough to put together on the EGR/air intake system. obviously these are his images so if he'd prefer i not post them i can take them down.

PO401 and EGR/air intake manifold with pictures

i'm starting from a dead start with some of this stuff so i found it helpful to put in a little work trying to wrap my head around what i have here. it's a tad OCD but it is basically what i have to do to learn things.

not sure if they are helpful to any other noobs but i figured to post them. as you can see there are a couple images that are incomplete so i may try to finalize it at some point if anyone has part numbers and names for anything left out.

a couple of the images are from another forum member so as soon as i find that thread i will link it here as well.
