Howdy! First, the good news: any vehicle that is 25 years old qualifies for the collector plates, but I don't know about historic. Go to ADOT on line and read all about it. Now, for the bad news: all vehicles made in 1967 and newer are required to do smog. But, if you get the special plates, ya don't need the smog test. BTDT John

Is it just historic plates? Or do you need classic insurance also. Make sure you have all your ducks in a row before going to DMV. You don't want to find out you need something else and have to go a second time.

what he said /\

If you have access to an address, registering it outside of Maricopa County eliminates emissions. There are some risks, especially if it is a DD, but the chance of getting caught is slim.

It's much easier and cheaper to just go the "normal" route. See if you pass emissions first before subjecting yourself to the costs and limitations of historical/collecter insurance. Just my .02

X3, true for most. Make sure the tune-up, valve adjustment, etc, is good, add some alcohol to the fuel, cross your fingers and hope for the best!:hillbilly:

Is it just a tail pipe test or do they look for cats and smog pump in Gilbert/PHX area?

I am moving in next few months with a 88 FJ62 that has 0 smog equipment left.

Look forward to west wheelin.

I know it's more than tail pipe test. Almost sure they will check for Cats. I haven't had to take my 89 thru emission in the last eight years. I use to take my 68 FJ40 and 89 FJ62 thru emissions. I think the 68 was just a tail pipe and gas cap look. On the 89 under the hood inspection, cats, gas cap, gas tank and then tail pipe. Now the only ones I take thru are OBDII and they just plug in and look at the gas cap.

Get a PO Box outside of Maricopa county, problem solved.

I believe the post office now requires a address for everyone using a PO box. Might be a catch22. I thought about it but never figure it was worth the risk. When I first got my cabin I had a HC Box#. Coconino County has now issued street addresses to every property in the county and the mail box has been changed to match that address. I am also pretty sure the tag you put on your plate is a different color it the vehicle is registered in non emission counties than those that require it. Big brother is figuring out how to close that loop hole. Probably only going to get worst.

The only one that I know who got busted was work related, monitored him parked at work everyday. IIRC, even if the rig is based out of the county, if it is used to commute in the county, for work, school, etc, it must be emission registered. If it is not a DD, chances of getting caught are slim, if used for work, etc, the chance goes up.

The early rigs get the whole deal, under hood/rig visual equipment inspection, fuel cap/vapor test, treadmill run with tail pipe sniff. '96 and later only get the OBD2 test, ECU interrogation and fuel cap/vapor test, no visual or tail pipe sodomizing.

hmm

i think i remember seeing a aftermarket system last time i was under so maybe i wont have issues. and ive got the split pipes that come out both left and right so that may help to :hhmm: thanks for the quick reply's ... dont you have something better to do? :p

But those days are numbered. Everyone in the 85390 zip code (Wickenburg PO rural delivery, including the Yavapai addresses) got emissions notices starting last year. Prior to this, Morristown was the outer limit out this way.

But almost everyone gets an automatic exemption; one just has to apply for it. They are reaching out for commuters living out here. Those that admit to commuting to work or school in the valley do not get the exemption. It's probably just a matter of time before non-commuters' exemptions disappear.

no underhood for me, no visual - forgot the cut-off, I think it's at '75 or so

treadmill run by a technician, gas tank lid test and sniffer

I don't think they really have an idea what they are looking for

half of the technicans can't even drive stick shifts, so why do you think they would recognize a carburetor :hillbilly:

After 25+ years the local PO just sent out a form which required proof of residence, 2 copys of utility bills, and deed of property.

oh they dont my jeep wouldnt hit the high rpms or hit top speeds as if something was keeping it in low rpms.......

2 guesses at what it was. sadly it was my mom getting it done for me so she drove home going some slow speed with a car thats over reving....

what was the issue?:p

That's pretty sad when nobody at a emission station can figure what shifter the guy moved and get it bac into 2H. I glad anything other OBDII is out of emission range, With the OBDII it's only going to get worst for the older sticker shift vehicles as they become fewer and fewer.

What if you own property and live off grid in your county?
