Took both the 40 and the 55 through emissions today. The 40 passed. The 55 failed. It passed CO but failed HC.

Doesn't surprise me. It had never been through emissions before, and all I did was clean and gap the plugs, and set the timing. After the fail, I went back to the garage and checked, and the carb was running very rich. I tweaked it, but still may have my client who runs a shop get it through the 2nd time.

How far off was it? Alcohol is your friend!

Just add some denatured alcohol. Works for me on HC's everytime.

Newbie taking his FJ40 through emissions for the first week - where do you pick up denatured alcohol, and how much should I put in? Thanks for the tip!

ACE or some such hardware store - comes in like half gallon tin cans or larger - I would put at least two quart or more - do not use rubbing alcohol or anything from a supermarket

but if your guy gets it dialed in, there should be no need to eff with it

Found a vacuum leak. Fixed it. Changed rotor, cap and plug wires. Passed this time, and wasn't even close.

As an aside, I think I am liking this 1.5 f engine more and more. My 40 w/ the 2F, all hopped up, runs like a scared rabbit compared to most 40's, but this 1.5F is smooth as silk.
