Hey there folks,

Posting here in hopes that some of you may have knowledge that could save me a good few hours of troubleshooting. In the process of fixing some issues with my DOME circuit, I removed my RS3000 alarm system. After correcting all of my issues with that circuit, I noticed the following issues, most likely related to the wiring related to the Stop Light Switch from what I determined.

- Can't shift out of park without hitting manual release button.
- ABS warning light constantly on
- Combination meter backlight not working
- Brake lights DO work

Also probably related, the previous owner told me that the truck was broken into in the past and they made a mess hacking out wires in the drivers side kick panel, where a lot of the alarm and dome wires run. Everything worked upon purchase so I didn't pay it too much mind and still don't regret buying such an amazing vehicle, but when I started troubleshooting and removed the kick panel I revealed an absolute rats nest and hack job of a repair. Poorly crimped connections with several wires broken, zip tied and taped off in different directions. Took much longer than expected to fix everything thus far.

I'm hoping that this was caused by me cutting one wire that goes from the stop light switch, since it appears that all of my current issues are a part of this circuit. Worst case scenario I may have to run wires from the SLS to each individual component that it is tied into, listed below:

- ABS ECU
- ECT ECU
- Engine ECU
- CC ECU
- Shift lock ECU

Pictures of the relevant diagrams, if anyone has anything that I missed here that could probably help too, but checked both the FSM, electrical supplement, and RS3000 manual. Based on the diagrams its the Green-White wire coming off the SL switch going to each of the above ECUs. The electrical supplement manual shows the first four ECUs above but doesn't show the Shift lock ECU at all, which is instead shown in the big main FSM, it is kind of odd that the diagram shown in the FSM only shows the connections to the shift lock control ECU and none of the other components in the supplement...

Thanks in advance for all of your knowledge, I couldn't have fixed anything without you guys!

As you've discovered, the EWD is not the only source of info. The FSM actually provides test procedures for electrical items, such as the Shift Lock circuit found starting on page AT-12

The combination meter backlight has NOTHING to do w/ any of the other circuits you mentioned. you have backlights everywhere else?

Thanks for the reply!

Yeah I suppose I should just run through the test procedures in the FSM…

Also what kind of manual is that with the wire colors in your last pic? Looks nice! Where might I find one?

And yes I do have all indicator lights working on the combination meter, except for the main illumination/backlight. Suppose I’ll just have to take a look at the bulb and rheostat.

That's the EWD. Look in the Resources section of this site. EWD and FSM are there.

I believe there are two bulbs. You might have something simple as a couple burned out bulbs. Rheostat also controls dimming of everything else (like the shift pattern, etc), so if everything ELSE dims, its not the issue. Does your 'D' light work? that's the one that usually doesn't :D

Yeah all shifter position indicators and warning lights work. Just not the backlight that illuminates the speedo and other dials.

Probably unrelated but I might as well ask while I have the left kick panel removed.

I found this connector unplugged, with no female connector nearby. Also having a hard time even identifying it with the EWD, 9 pins. Possibly connector IL4? Although this seems to go to the fuel gauge and fuel pump and those are working fine.

Any ideas what this 9 pin connector could be?

what vehicle and year? there are differences in the wiring between LC and LX, and years. the 1996 LC EWD I have doesn't even show a IL4 connector. the only connector that looks like that is labeled II2, and its in the passenger footwell serving functions like door switches, power seat, and rear heater.

Did you just remove the Box under the seat or, track all the wires down and unplug them, reconnect the ones that need that.
You referenced cutting a wire for switch. I never found that necessary to be cutting out the Toyota Security system.
Check all the fuses?
as jht3 asked. What year?
Early ones differ than later years.

1997 1FZFE LC

Yeah I noticed that connector too but location is different like you said. Oh well. Assuming it’s unrelated to my current issues since it was completely unplugged when I found it.

Removed the brain under the seat as well as all wiring I could trace out. The wires I cut were at the points that the alarm install instructions say to tap off of factory wires. I left the taps in place and cut the wire going to the alarm harnesses. Also plugged in the old connectors after removing the alarm connectors between them.

Maybe I missed it, but where did you find the factory alarm install instructions?
