^ Consider that most grounds in the vehicle are to body panels, having a well grounded body is critical for those ground connections. Lots of painted metal, so Toyota clearly identified ground mounting points on various panels to ensure good ground coverage.

The block is a primary ground connection due to the large ground cable that connects to the block from the battery (for the starter motor etc). There's also a ground strap right from the battery to the driver's side fender (on the 1fz 80's).

Losing good ground connections will lead to all sorts of electrical gremlins - especially with bad weather, corrosion, mud getting to any remaining ground connections in the engine bay etc.
