They wanted $700 for the fuel pump.

Ouch.

Ask them to give you back the "bad" one... just in case.

I think I'll throw a CD in the tool bag with the electronic version of all the Toyota manuals. Someone usually has a laptop in their truck.

sorry to hear all this. Sounds like an interesting trip, all right. I guess one can prepare all one wants, there is always the unexpected kicking in... Were you in the middle of the boonies when it conked out?

(so, this was not a ploy to spend more time around casinos, then, I take it... :) )

I am still shaking my head. The list price for the pump is $311.31....

Doug's cost for the pump, sock, sock retainer, cover gasket and fuel line gaskets with air freight was 281 bucks......;)

But Dan, that would be for a Toyota fuel pump which doesn't include the fuel tank and the 2nd row seats which have to be replaced if a Lexus mechanic touches them. Can't have old greasy parts going back into Dougie's Lexus. :D

The R&R on the fuel pump is pretty easy. About 40min IIRC, and that was going slow.
Good Luck Doug,
Cheers,
Sean

Oh, that hurts! And I still carry my original one with me since I replaced it with the supra one - I knew I should have gone up there Friday night!!!!!!

Glad you got it fixed but still make sure you don't have some bad wires leading to your fuel pump getting cooked.

The Supra one would've been nice...and was in stock at my favorite parts department...but that would've meant thinking outside the box -- a violation of Lexus regulations, as I recall from my past dealings with them.

Doug,
It looks like the problem has been identified but I have a fairly clear memory on the details with Morgan's EFI fuse issue. (Other poster mentioned O2 sensor and that was Morgan's problem though there are more details...) FWIW, Morgan felt the problem was specific to the 93-94 models due to the routing of the wiring.

Let us know as this saga proceeds.

... Later ....

Found it! http://www.birfield.com/~morgan/tech/2nd_O2_wires.html

B- I looked all over for that link...I guess I was using eric's "squatting monkey" search technique -- no wonder I failed in my search attempt  The only thing I could find was his original response to my email -- IIRC, the link had changed. I'm saving that one for future reference. FWIW...I had the same problem with my 94. Anyone out there with side-by-side cats might want to take a look at the link and save the info for future reference...and carry a bunch of 15A fuses...

I did ask for all old parts -- checked off the box on the envelope when I stuffed my keys in the drop box.

Luckily for me, we had reached pavement and I had just aired up. Engine was running when I disconnected the compressor.

I came back to find a non-running engine. As far as I know, it simply stopped running.

I was out in the boonies enough to not have cell phone reception -- Verizon? No, I can't hear you now, dammit!
No, I guess you can't always plan for everything. Kudos to all the guys who busted ass trying to fix the problem though -- many thanks and at a minimum, I owe you guys the meal I planned on making at the Springs that night...shoot...all that stuff in my fridge will need to get tossed now...

Casinos? I had my fill of them a long time ago. I spent the weekend before DV in a bunch of casinos for a bachelor party. I have one about 5 miles from me that I've only been to once. No...it wasn't a ploy to visit casinos...

Satellite phone. I'll be either renting one for extended trips or buying one for emergency situations...

Ham radio, talk to repeater with phone linkup.

Repeaters aren't always available though, especially ones with phone links, in Death Valley.

I think renting a sat phone is a good idea.

Dan -- you rock! :D

Words cannot fully express how grateful I am for your help.
Thanks again!

I thought it was just in a can with extra lining?

Doug,

Are you kidding? The Tow Truck driver didn't get there till 6:30pm:mad:   :flipoff2:!

Hopefully, the nice lady stayed till that time? Sorry, I should of stayed longer - since the girly wheelers - whimped out & never made to the springs, sheeze a little snow, you would think they all drove ROVERS:grinpimp: Well, at least Eduardo was there waiting for the big cook-off!

Man, I would of gone bezerk when the initial truck broke down, but, hey what can you do at that point, my friend!

Glad Mr. D came through! I remember we briefly looked at the fuel pump relay, which was good, should of looked at the pump - my bad:D

Let me know if I can help further, since LV is a hop, skip, & jump from So. Cal.

Joe

Hopefully, shelby is doing better - what a trooper:princess:

No, not in Vegas anymore. Got picked up at 6:30PM. Driver didn't want to try to make it over the pass to Vegas on Saturday night -- I had to spend the night in Pahrump -- got the last room (literally) in town. Sunday morning consisted of driving toward Vegas, the flatbed's serpentine belt getting shredded; waiting for another flatbed; getting to Vegas; renting a car and driving the 10 hours home...trying desperately to not fall asleep at the wheel
Yeah...it's been an "interesting" couple of days.

Yep...it's waiting for you. Whenever you're ready.

Doug,

I'm glad to hear that things are working out. The towing guy in Furnace Creek needs some serious competition. What an idiot.
Let me know if I can help in any way.

Regards

Alvaro

Joe,
The lady did stay until the truck arrived -- she was super-cool!
Thanks for everything you did -- I owe you big time for making everything happen.

Looks like I'll be driving to LV tomorrow and and leaving some time on Thursday with the rig.

Thanks again Joe!

So, did you tell the Lexus dealership that the list on the part was half what they were going to charge you?

Who are you going to have fix it?

I need to find out what the "standard" part cost is for a fuel pump from Lexus first. I'm going to call the 2 lexus dealerships in town to get estimates for fuel pump replacement for a LX 450. Based on what I get from them, if the price (for the pump) is significantly lower, I'll take this with me and will have a chat with the service department manager at Lexus of LV.

Right now, all they know is that I source the part outside of them and that it's on its way -- they don't know what I paid.

Since the rig is not running, I'll have them complete the repair. I will check the time allocated to the repair and will compare it with the estimates I'll receive today. If LV's "book time" is significantly different than what my local guys state, I'll have a few more words with the folks in LV as well as taking my battle up the Lexus customer satisfaction chain.

First things first...get it fixed...then fight (if I need to).

Please ask the stealership techs HOW they diagnosed the issue.

It would certainly be nice to have that test procedure in our mental tool kits.

BTW, your kid rocks!

Let us know what we can do to help get this issue behind you- not to mention you and your rig home safely.
