Can any one please advise me. I have UK 1994 4.2 80 when pressing the center diff lock switch PWR lights up on the console, the diff does not lock up. The ECT switch does not appear to affect any thing. The switches seem to be interchangeble, does any one know what the colour coding is for any of these switches.

Welcome to the forum

Where is your C/D switch located? Maybe you just press the PWR Button next to the shifter. There should be two buttons: 1. PWR and 2. 2nd Gear (tranny starts in 2nd gear) !!

The C/D switch must be on the center console if installed :)

Thank you for replying so quickly. The Center Diflock Switch is next to the ECT Switch on the dash board, the only switch on the gear leaver is to activate overdrive as my Landcruiser is an automatic I do not apear to have a facility to start in second gear. The ECT switch I believe should controll the shift patern of the auto i.e sport mode. I just get the impresion that mabee someone has incorectly connected the ECT and Centre diflock switch.

I think 2nd gear from 95 models and up. Just check the wiring. But I don't think that the ECT switch and the D/L switch use the same connection. If so you can just plug it out and plug it in the right button. For the ECT please ask a fellow cruiser maniac with a 94 Cruiser.

Hi Welcome!
Sorry, no idea at all how your UK vehicle differs from the US. When your PWR light comes on, do you detect a change in shift points?
You could also check under and test the connector on the Xfer case for a signal?

IF the ECT switch is plugged into the harness for the CDL switch on a '94, it will function as a CDL switch. They seem to be completely interchangable, at least as far as the lights on the dash go. Someone else will have to verify color codes and if that's accurate, but in my experience they do the same thing. You just need to plug the ECT switch into the ECT harness and the CDL switch into the CDL harness and you'll be good to go.

This is something to keep in mind for '94 owners with an ECT switch and no CDL switch, could come in handy when you banana your front drive shaft.

will it help just as much if you Pretzel your shaft?

Gold Finger, I think someone has had your dash apart and crossed up the switch harnesses when they reassembled. The only other, much less likely explanation is that the wirign for the light on the dashes is crossed. You can test this by putting the truck in 4-lo. If the diff lock light comes on then, you know it is the switch harnesses.

Is your radio factory or does it look like someone has been into the dash for some reason before?
More than likely that's how it got screwed up.

Don't worry if the switches are, well, switched. All the factory wiring should be in there anyway.

Good luck.

Hi
A while for my reply, yes the original radio has been removed, I have to be a little more open here as I have only had the Landcruiser a couple of months and it is my first one. When I purchased the vehicle it had not much of a history and since owning it one or two problems have emerged. Unusualy for a UK machine it had no ECT Switch but a blank. When I investigated, an unused socket lay behind the radio.I bought an ECT switch and connected it. The center diff lock does not seem to operate, though the relay does click by my right ankle ( RIGHT HAND DRIVE )when I put it into LOW RATIO but not when I operate the switch. I was suspicious about switches being crossed over and after the encouraging comments from you guys I swopped the switches and the respective sockets over. The Center Diff Lock relay now clicks? but it still wont lock up , I have taken the trouble to investigate your excellent web site and now see where I have to go next ie clean out the various actuators and take it from there.

goldfinger, are you sure ECT was an intended option on a UK diesel like yours? It would be quite odd for it to be removed by a PO since it is a useful feature, but perhaps the power mode shifting pattern is not set up for the diesel, or perhaps Toyota did not deem it necessary on a diesel? In north america the CDL switch was never an official option after 92 but the harness was left in the dash and so you could order it as a part.

There has been speculation here that one purpose of the ECT is to allow Toyota to claim good "regular" EPA mileage while giving drivers the option of more power. Maybe the regulators in the UK were not so generous.

Anyway, that is pure speculation.

as for operation of the CDL you are correct that there are many many threads on this. I am assuming the CDL light (yellow bowtie-ish) comes on when you go into 4 lo but not when you flick the switch? Have you tried to verify whether or not it may actually be engaging but no dash light? You can do this by putting it on a hoist and trying to stop both front or rear wheels (read the diff for dummies thread in the faq if unsure what a CDL does)

As far as I know the ECT Switch is standard on UK Turbo Diesels. When the ECT switch is pressed PWR lights up in green on the instrument cluster, and there appears to be an increase in the maximum revs that each gear sustains when accelerating hard, the revs also appear to increase as if a lower gear was selected at times depending of course on the cruising speed at the time. Unfortunately my CDL when operated does not light up on the instrument cluster at all and I therefore suspect that the light is inoperative and that I will have to replace it. The axle dif lock switch when operated makes the icon flash repeatedly depending whether I press rear or front and rear when I get two flashing lights. At no time no mater what combination of switches I press can I make any of the Diff Locks operate front, rear or centre. I understand from texts on your web site that the locks will only operate in order, centre, centre plus rear, centre plus rear and front. I have managed to demonstrate to my self that no locks work even when in low ratio by driving up a wet grass mound when one spinning wheel prevented the advancement of the vehicle

Try shifting into Low Range, does the CDL light illuminate then? If so, the switch is at fault. If the light still doesn't illuminate in Low, whether blinking or not, there is something larger the matter.

The front will lock when the rear will not, just turn the switch all the way. Mine did for awhile, then the rear started to work.

alright well if it standard on diesels then I scratch my head as to why someone not only disconnected and removed it but also went and bought a blank to fill the gap, then misconnected it to the CDL switch. that is an odd thing to do to say the least but maybe someone lost or broke the ECT switch and was too cheap to buy a switch instead of a blank.

from your description I agree your cdl is not working in any mode. I would not assume the cdl dash light is bad. Mine does not flash the way the front and rear lockers do before engaging. It is either off or on. I think you have a problem at the actuator and the light is not coming on because you are not engaging.

I'm surprised that Shed hasn't chimed in. Maybe he knows a little bit about UK diesel 80s. Or maybe he's just looking for a clean avatar :flipoff2: .
