Does anyone know if the eBay snorkel uses the same mounting holes as the name brand snorkels? I'm interested in purchasing the eBay snorkel and figured if it doesn't last long I can go the name brand route but I do not want to screw myself by making holes for the eBay snorkel and the name brand snorkels require different holes.

I downloaded the template that @NLXTACY posted in ARB Safari Snork Template The holes were close to where I needed them for my eBay snorkel, but not exactly where I needed them. The big hole was in the right spot. Once that is cut, you can put the small studs in their holes. Rub a Sharpie marker pen on the ends of the studs, and slam them against the template. Drill where the marker ink stuck.

If you decide to replace with an ARB (or another knockoff), the extra holes in the fender won't matter much. You'll cover all of them with the replacement snork.

I have a few friends that have been running the eBay one for year with zero issues. Mine has been on for 6 months no issues at all. I would not be worried about it. Plus if you did break it just get another one you can break 5 of the eBay ones for the cost of the safari.

I got the snorkel off of amazon got 37 + 30 shipping which adds up to 67 dollas (i went to public school) and install it weeks ago and no issues. The template was a little off but aligned template on snorkel and adjust template and then position on truck and drill. Pretty much dead on the first time. All holes are the same as the others more expensive snorkels

^^ Speaking of public school, rumor has it you were shaking like a little school girl when it came to running the drill...

Much like the best surgeons, I find a stiff drink will steady the hand.

I used a Safari template to install my ebay snorkel. All holes lined up without issue.

I had the same experience as everyone above.

One caveat: Don't be afraid to drill the holes at least slightly oversize. In the end, it makes fitting the snorkel easier, and it really doesn't make a difference if the holes are snug or loose, as long as the nuts can't slip through the holes.

I removed my fender to mount the snorkel. To me, it was easier that way. If you do that, you'll need to undo the screws holding the metal piece in front of the windshield (it's name escapes me) and this will afford you a good opportunity to clean that piece out. I guarantee it will be full of leaves and other gunk; gunk that can cause corrosion, if it hasn't already. Some folks remove this piece as periodic maintenance. To do so you'll need some kind of angle driver with a JIS #2 bit.

I'm not 100% sure, but I believe that piece is called the "cowl or cowling."

I was hungover from the night before

If you want to see some other threads that discuss installation and discuss the merits of taking the fender off vs. reaching your arms in to get most of the nuts on... search is your friend. Here's my post after putting on two snorkles one weekend. (One for me. One on another 80 series.) Snorkels!

I gotta say I'm not terribly surprised the mounts line up the same with the Safari and ChiCom parts- after all, the ChiCom part is a copy, and the easiest way to copy something is to really copy it. I had to go with the Safari part myself, cuz the valets at the malls around here won't park you up front if they see the ChiCom part.

I think the fastest I've seen someone claim was under three hours. I think the slowest I saw anyone admit to was well over 6 hours including a run to Home depot to replace a stud. (The front stud on many of the eBay snorkels is not the same as the others.)

I think my install was on the slow side, as is most of my work on my truck. Two people and about 4.5 hours.

Thanks. I'm going to a local trail Sunday. Hopefully I can can it done by then.

Nothing worse than when your nuts slip through the holes...

I need to have my ratcheting angle driver, JIS #2 bit manufactured and sell it. That thing makes removing the cowl a piece of cake...
