Hi everyone,

I have a 95 fj80 with e-lockers. I had to go out of town and had a shop change the oil, replace the differential gear fluid, they checked out the e-brake and the checked out the EGR.

I got it back tonight and as I'm prepping for Toyota Jamboree I decided to engage the lockers to make sure I was good for the weekend. Turns out I'm not.

I can get the center diff to engage, but the front nor the rear lockers light up. They're not even flashing.
at one point they looked dim when I engaged the center, but now they don't light up at all. I feel like it could be a ground issue or something electrical but I don't even know where to start looking.

I did look at the actuators and they are connected.
Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks
Alex

Well found the issue. I took the panel behind the switch apart, and literally followed the harness through the firewall, down to the front diff, back into the firewall, past the 4 wheel drive box, up to the glove box and there's where I found the problem. My glove box doesn't hold itself up, so if you open it and don't know it'll drop down and all the components behind it get exposed. While looking back there, I noticed two multi-pin connectors facing the firewall but were not connected. I started to look for the other ends to see if they got loose. I noticed there was a box on the right, behind the speak with two empty connectors. I was looking at the input pattern and I thought that maybe thees fit there. I plugged them in and bam the lights on the dash come back and the lockers engage. Then I got mad, but because I used to own a shop I wanted to give the benefit of the doubt and maybe the fell out. Nope, they were extremely hard to pull out. Once I pulled them out the lockers wouldn't engage but the lights didn't turn off like they did before. So now I'm going to drive the vehicle for a while while not connected, to see if I can replicate the issue and then confront the owner.

This is some real BS, but at least I got it working and heading to the Jamboree!

See you guys there!

Alex

This s why don't like people touching my LC, I had an exhaust put in, and before the guy started, I asked him hey did you disconnect, the battery, his response, was no, I am like hey, this thing has computers you disconnect it before you weld

It is llae and I might be wrong. But are you looking at the stereo amp? People often unplug those and the stereo "works better". Maybe PO did that? Maybe it is unrelated to you lockers. But you might have other loose conections to the lookers or a short that got wiggled while you were tracing wires. If you cant duplicate it by unplugging the plugs you plugged in then keep searching for your problem.

Wholly smokes man! I hope you're not right, because if you are then that means I have something else loose in the cab. I've had the truck a year and it's never done this before. I guess I'll find out this weekend.

Thanks for response!

shouldn't the amp be in the rh rear quarter panel, not behind the glove box. that's where both my 95 and 96 were

Yup sounds like you plugged the amp back in it sits behind the speaker and has fins on it, do you have aftermarket stereo? If so unplug the amp , locker box is down in the kick panel if I remeber correctly

I've never seen amp in the rh rear kick panel and have worked every year, the sub sits back there that's it. Amp sits up front right hand side off the glove box

I believe that is separate amp for sub the one everyone unplugs for stereo is in glove box

@ OP - what result are you looking for from the shop owner?

I expect he'll not give you satisfaction, esp since he really had no real reason to pull your front kickpanel to access the locker relay box.

I'm not saying it's not your right to confront him, just "set the bar low" as to any answer he gives as satisfactory. Because I highly doubt it will.

I agree, I've decided there's no way to prove anything and technically if what I plugged in is the amp, then I have no claim.
The black 4wd box at the bottom was loose and bouncing around. I placed it back in the bracket. On a side note the radio and clock are also dead.
Could plugging in the amp, burned out the clock and radio?
