Took my 80 up there last weekend. As it stands right now it's a great place for 80's. Mild to wild wheeling with some expo type trails. This place is going to get bad quick. The more popular it gets it will turn into a park for built buggies with big motors. But right now all the trail are pretty much dirt, I
pretty much did just about the entire park before the rain moved in. The trail Tellico road is an easy 12 mile scenic trail that heads towards the old tellico trail 6. On the opposite side of the park I rode out a dirt road easily 10+ miles exploring and was told it had 5 more miles to go. Head up the trail buzzards roost for prob one of the best views of the mountains I've ever seen. Primitive camping is exactly what it is. And fill up before you get there and take an extra 5 gallons. It's along ways to town and $4 a gallon.

Is this the same area as Tellico OHV that was closed a few years back? We always went in from Murphy, NC but I think part of access was from TN. We always got gas at the last stop station because they had a great "free air" commpressor so we figured we would patrionize them for the air that got us back safely to Murphy. Heading back on less than 10 psi is never fun and takes a long time if you try to fill up trailside.

Thanks in advance for your reply.

The environmentalist closed the place. This new place is right beside it.

The irony in this is the streams they complained about have more sediment in them now than when the trails were open. This is even after they took them out and replanted them. Turns out the trails were doing a better job of keeping the water clean than mother nature.

You go right thru Murphy out Hanging Dog road just like we used to. As far as I can remember we didn't get near any streams last weekend, other than the one we camped beside. I'm hoping for a fall trip. Felt nice being back in the area, like I said it will not be to long before mild rigs can't do to much there.

mmmmm MLK that would be fun.

Cabin?
Those cabins are expensive for basically a shell. $60 a night then they may charge per additional person. No power in them or around. Campsite #2 has a shelter built over the picnic table. I stayed on site 13 on the creek next to the cabins. For January/Feb depending on how many people y'all would have they have a cabin that sleeps like 9+ for $150 a night with full amenities. I have contact info if anyone wants it.

We're actually thinking further into January or February.

Swizzlesticks!!!! :crybaby:

I guess I'll just see what I have going on when you guys pick a date. Also you know it's gonna be cold AF in Jan or Feb right?

How cold you are depends on how close you are to the heater or fire. In the past we usually rented a nice cabin somewhere around the tellico area and lived high on the hog.

Originally when MLK started we camped, then softies like you started taking over the club :flipoff2: I'd be down for either.

In the past, when the Tellico OHV was open, we have rented a cabin in the Murphy, NC area. Lots of good options there. It seems like rates were fair, too. Of course, there's nothing like camping and telling stories around a roaring campfire. At least with camping, you don't have to share a room or even a cabin with a loud snoring "bear."

You will be lucky to have any vehicle running by next year at the rate you're going.

Speaking of Tellico. Does anyone else remember seeing the old stump that was carved out in the shape of the man's face on the side of the road going up to Tellico? I can't remember how far it was and whether it was on Hanging Dog or what but I remember it was a few miles from the parking lot. It was in a curve and we always said a little "prayer" to it that carnage would be held to a minimum on the trip. On the way out, we usually just yelled at it! :)

It's not there any more, I looked for it. I had an old pic though.

To me wheeling and camping go hand in hand. I know where a great campground is off the beaten path is, it's on Ed graves rd off hanging dog road. We always camped there because we had the place all to ourselves. And hot showers to boot and a creek side camp. Here's an old pic when we stayed there years ago.
