Durabak applying the Smooth over the rough

I have viewed most of the threads concerning Durabak and have been mosty impressed. I'm lookng at rolling on durabak to the roof of my Tan 60 before installing my new INTI roof rack to protect the roof while transporting fuel cans on the rack. I'm not sure if I want to use the rough or the smooth. Most of the pics I've seen after applying the smooth are not that great.

Should I apply the rough and then the smooth? I will use black rough on my rear bumper and sliders.
So smooth over rough?

I put rough on my roof to 'cover' the old OEM rack holes and area where the 80 series strips had been. I didn't cover the entire roof tho. It's held up fine.

Edit: Given how close you are, I'd be glad to meet you sometime to let you see the texture on both the flares and roof under my INTI rack. It's been on a few years now so you'll also be able to see how the rough UV in black is holding up. Shoot me a PM if you're interested.

I wouldn't roll the rough Durabak, it tends to stand up the texture. A cheap under coating gun will put it on with texture but it will be 'rounded' rather than like 10 grit sandpaper.

If it's exposed to sunlight use the UV protected stuff. The non UV gets chalky pretty quickly.

Where to find and how much for the inexpensive undercoat gun? I'd rather spray then roll anytime.

Sorry about the delay. I'm not sure if it goes any further when you roll it, but I have the tendency to roll it out too far making it thin. Spraying it is really easy and tends to go on more evenly. We use it on the floor of our helicopter and I can get an even coat on a 4x8 sheet of plywood with a half gallon that will withstand a stokes litter being dragged in and out and 9 pairs of Whites doing their damnest to tear it up.

No worries... I hear there is an inexpensive spray gun out there. Who makes it? How hard is it to clean after each coat? Nice Helo.....

Hey FFlyr. What type of gun did you use to apply the liner?

Well, It now looks as If I may be home at the end of the month. POR-15, Durabak "Sand" UV, Textured have been ordered. Once I'm closer to getting home I'll order the gun or I just might pick one up upon my return.

Not only do I want to spray the roof (textured), but I think I may want to spray the interior rear with the smooth to see how it looks. Prob with the same sand color even though I have the brown interior. I would also like to hit my wheel wells with smooth black. We'll see.
