ha have a dumb question on my 88 62 while idling I took off my oil cap off and the damn thing wants to die unless I have the Throttle pulled .If I don't it dies... this cant be normal I know my gas tank is still messed up but this cant be the problem I would not think. I am new to land cruiser fuel injection. Thanks for all help in advance

If your truck is a FJ62 with a 3FE and its electronic fuel injection sytem intact, it does NOT have a manual choke. Could you be talking about the manual throttle?

They won't run with the oil filler cap removed,, thats normal

Hey,
Reviving the the dead, I have a friend who tells me his '60 won't run unless the cap is off! Any ideas? I was going to tell him to go after the PCV valve when I talked to him next.
Thanks,
Ben

I'm going to take a guess and say his rings got cooked at some point and the engine is producing a ton of blowby into the crank case. Taking off the oil cap is relieving the pressure and allowing it to run.

Awesome - I'll work thata way.

thats called a vac leak dum dum

do a compression check and it should tell you everything you need to know.

will it run with the pcv valve off and oil cap on? if so like you already said possible pcv valve rare but can happen.

Full of ourselves today aren't we..

None of the F/2F's I have oned have ever had a problem with the oil fill cap or even the valve cover being off.

Where does the Vac leak actualy occur?

Correct a 60 will not but a 62 will with the cap removed.....loss of vacuum to the intake

Oh yea......lol this thread is 2 years old

Not so much loss of vacuum to the intake, but a source of air that hasn't been measured by the EFI's air flow meter. Causes a lean condition since normally crankcase vent air is sourced from the air inlet tract downstream of the flow meter. Has to be plumbed that way for the PCV's operation to not mess with the air/fuel ratio.

Funny, my 62 runs fine, cap on or cap off. Had to try after reading this.

yea... sorry jason, didnt mean to come off rude there.

this is 100% correct.
some of the BMW's, Mercedes, and Volkswagens do it as well im sure there are other that also do it but cant really think of any right off bat.

No worries amigo.

So the PCV valve is the main culprit right?
The Fuel injection is just more sensitive to the additional "available air"?

Opening the oil fill cap allows in air that did not get measured by the air flow meter, so the idle A/F ratio leans out. If removing the cap has no effect I'd question how good a job the PCV valve is doing.

I don't understand why Carbs aren't affected, but they don't seem to be. IME it is mostly the air flap - Air Door (Bosch L-Jetronic type design) that seems to be the most affected by opening the oil filler cap. Could be that those systems don't have enough IAC adjustment range? :dunno:
