Ive used fram filters with 20w-50 oil for over 3 years no issues. What is the big issue with these filters? Never had dry start issues or anything related

Fram filters is like pouring oil through a door screen. Is it a filter? Yes. How much "filtering" does it really do?

They are cheap for a reason.

Is it worth the $1 to $2 per filter to risk a $8000 engine rebuild?

Not to me. I have ALWAYS bought the best oil filters available. That used to be Wix. For my LC , it will now be nothing but Toyota. To me, it's not worth the risk of damaging my engine. I want to achieve 500K miles.

You can buy "half cases" of YZZD3 filters on amazon for a pretty good price. I was worried if they were actually Toyota or not. I was pretty pleased that they literally CUT the carton in half and shipped it to me that way.

So I got half the Toyota box and all the factory packaging on each sealed filter.

This is $5.38 per filter.

910pidgen, when I worked at the dealership, we replaced two motors due to the poorer media in fram filters coming apart. They are garbage.

My OEM OCD would prevent me from using a Fram filter but it also requires me to ask where the perception that Fram filters “don’t really filter” originated.

For me there has been no solution on start up rattle.

Several filters - no help
Large filter - no help
Different weight oil - this has had some help
New hydraulic tensioner - no help
Pre '95 ratchet tensioner - no help
90° filter adapter - no help
Crank it for 15 sec prior to starting - helped

Next step

What weight/brand of oil helped?
I have the same issue, also installed the 90deg ford adapter.

Cut one open (new) and compare it directly with one from another manufacturer. The filter media is very porous. Think K&N filtrf compared to a Toyota air filter.

Also, my brother was a truck shop manager and he did lots of longevity tests on variuva filters, including Wix.

Wix was the best at that time and Fram was nowhere close.

I personally can't attest to them not filtering but I can say that even the FRAM heavy duty version doesn't have good valves in them. A long time ago before I joined any forum or did any serious searching about them, I did a normal oil change on a (new to me) 5VZ-FE that was in my 2003 Tacoma. It was a first time changing the oil in that vehicle as I just purchased it a couple of weeks previous and I wanted to start the history record for myself. I put in a Fram filter. next morning I heard a very dry start up. only lasted a couple of seconds but terrified me. Did some searching on what it could be and found some forum explaining that some valves are bad in oil filters. I went expensive and got my self the high end Fram HD and it was the same thing every morning. Then I got mobile 1 and That fixed the issue. I've had issues with K&Ns leaking but they seem to have good valves, and I've had to stick screwdrivers through Mobile 1 filters that were only hand tightened, so Now I get YZZD3 in a bulk. I use them on both my 2001 tacoma and my LX. I haven't had a dry start yet.

I am not sure if the valve is more important than the filter, but If the top is dry, you better hope the filter media is catching what gets shaved off.

There is better than Wix brand out there with the correct threads and seal dimensions. Here is one example with very good specs:

In fact a fresh -yzzd3 is attached to my engine. I was merely bringing a fact and an option for those who want stellar filtration and possibly extending drain intervals safely.

We can shop for oil filters by dimensions and then choose the one we want rather than being limited to what the internet or the parts counter “person” offers based on year make and model.

A higher grade, large filter and Mobil 1 might be ideal for someone who puts miles on very quickly so that a 15k drain interval can be done without concern.
