Hello all! I tried posting this on /r/diesel but didn't get any responses, so I thought I would try here.
This is a diesel engine specifically, so this seems like the best place to put it for the most knowledgeable advice/help.
Disclaimer: I am not versed in motors at all. I can change the oil, and spark plugs, unfortunately this is a more complex issue.
The issue started last winter, it only happened a couple times, but when I would turn the key to off, the truck would not completely shut down. It seemed like either electricity or fuel was still being fed to the engine. Then engine itself would chug and it sounded like it would fire back up to running any second. I did some fiddling with the keys, and throttle line, and it seemed to just shut off. I blamed it on the super cold weather, as it only happened a couple times.
This spring summer, it became a lot more noticeable. I noticed that every time the engine was going to repeat this same occurrence, there was a semi-high pitched whining-spinning sound coming from under the hood. If that sound wasn’t present, the truck would shut off normally. It started happening more frequently, but I wouldn’t say it was a very common thing that was happening.
On to the start-up, a couple weeks ago I noticed it was taking longer and longer to start the truck. The spinning/whining sound would happen longer and longer each time, before the engine started.
I was scheduled to take the truck in to a shop on a Friday, but Thursday afternoon, the truck didn’t start at all. And again, I am not super knowledgeable, but the vehicle IS getting power to it, the batteries are not dead. Both were charged to 12v. What it sounds like (to me) the it is not getting fuel, or a spark from the glow plugs. Again, I could very well not know what I’m talking about.
Now recently, while the truck is in my garage and not starting, if I try to start it again, you ONLY hear that whining/spinning sound. Just this morning I tried again because I’m still trying to diagnose the issue, but the whining and spinning would not stop even if the key was put to the off position, or even completely removed from the truck. It wouldn’t stop, and I started to panic thinking it would burn something out, or break something, so I disconnected BOTH of the batteries and the spinning stopped.
If you tried to reconnected even one of the battery cables to the positive, the spinning/whining would start again. So now it is stuck in my garage with the batteries completely disconnected.
Some research online narrowed it down to a few things - the fuel cutoff solenoid (stuck open or shorted), the starter relay or ignition switch (shorted or stuck closed), or the starter motor solenoid (fused contacts). I have located what I BELIEVE to be the wire connecting to the fuel shutoff solenoid, but it is very hard to disconnect given the location of the plug. I was instructed to unplug that, then try and reconnect the battery. If the whining/spinning does not happen, the culprit is the fuel cutoff solenoid. So I am currently working on that right now.
While I do that, I have made short videos of the noise my truck is making, and was hoping someone could give me some direction or what to do.
Thank you for taking the time to read all of this, and I appreciate whatever help I can get!
