Anyone else have a problem with dry start up every time they start their cruiser? I’m new to the 4.5, and am not familiar with what is normal at start up. It builds oil pressure pretty quick, but it’s the two seconds of my engine sounding like it has no oil that makes my eye twitch. Input?

Mine, luckily does not do this, but from what I've read on MUD, its normal.
What weight oil are you running? Perhaps a heavier grade will help? Just a guess.

I did a forum search that came up with nothing. I don’t know if th searches pull from thread titles, or thread titles and posts within.

I use 10w30 valvoline. That’s about as thin as I like it, as it gets to 100+ degrees here in north Texas. If it’s normal, I’m fine with it. I don’t think it’s dry long enough for it to heat up the metal and cause serious excessive wear, but it’s definitely not good for the motor long term, I wouldn’t thing. I’m using an O’reilly brand oil filter. I may switch up to a fram, to see if it helps with any kind of drain down.

In fact, there has been a lot of talk about this issue on Mud. If you run a large oil filter, you could try the smaller -yzzd3. Going to the small filter has helped some. Personally, I run a 15w-40 diesel oil and have never heard top end rattle on start up no matter which size filter I have on my engine.

Try searching using "startup rattle". There is a lot of information to read. Fram filters are not good filters. There are several threads documenting Wix and Napa Gold filters (made by Wix) having major issues and engine failures. Your best filter is going to be using Toyota OEM filters that are reasonably priced.

I don’t know why I said Fram. I’m very anti fram. I like wix and have never heard of any problems with them. I’ll do a search on the items above. Thanks, ppc, and baldilox!

Yes, you really have some reading to do. Members here have experienced major engine damage due to defective Wix/Napa oil filters. The Toyota -yzzd3 seems to be an economical filter that is readily available and of above average quality.

That Wix thread scared me straight to a Toyota dealership and I bought a half case of YZZD3 filters.

I’ve got a dealership pretty close to me. I’ll get some.

I ordered a case of the Toyota filters online for less than I could buy Wix for locally.

For me there has been no solution on start up rattle.

Several filters - no help
Large filter - no help
Different weight oil - this has had some help
New hydraulic tensioner - no help
Pre '95 ratchet tensioner - no help
90° filter adapter - no help
Crank it for 15 sec prior to starting - helped

Next step

I have a kill switch, and now I crank it for 10 seconds like Phil. That has all but eliminated the start up rattle in my rig, and I'm grateful because that noise Drives Me Crazy.
(I also disabled the loud beep when you turn the key. I don't like noises.)

does this only pertain to the 4.5L? I really have no idea what everyone was describing above.....

I've been using the 90915-20004 (Old) Toyota short filter for at least 100 k miles with M1 5w-30 oil and I'm hereing the start up rattle for a second or two. Thinking of using 10w-30 next oil change.

Would like to see a write up on your kill switch

I am starting to get the startup rattle now too. I figured it was due to colder temps and thick oil. I like to use heavier oil as the car/engine gets older but now with the colder temps I will run thinner oil but I will use Toyota filters too.
