drum knuckles swap with disc knuckles?

I have a 1973 (11/72) with a front axle with drums and have picked up a '76 axle with discs. Can I just swap the knuckles and have the disc brakes or do I need to swap the entire axle?

I swapped hubs from an 81 into my 73. I used the axle shafts and lockouts from the 81 as well but not the axle housing. Make sure you get the hub centering tool (search for SST and you'll find tons of links and advice) to ensure the shims are set properly.

If I had to do mine all over. I'd do 60's knuckles (lager bolt pattern, bigger rotors) and 80's calipers (big a$$ calipers).
