Aren't the 80's front drivelines supposed to be out of phase?

Yes,

In relation to the rear, the front is 90 deg. out.

What the shop may have meant..is that the front was the "same" as the rear.. and therefore "improperly phased".

I have been dropping an axle for the past two weeks to have new joints and balancing done with no problems as in continues to be my DD.

I believe the front ds is 90 degrees out-of-phase. Just researched this last week.

David,

Be sure they know that the 80s front (only - not rear) drive shaft is indeed SUPPOSED to be 90 degrees out of phase. If they balanced the shaft while it was IN phase and handed it back to you and you're now figuring out this is true from the above posts then bring it back to them. If they balanced the shaft IN phase it will not work correctly. You can't just correct it at home by clocking the shaft out of phase. It must be balanced out of phase.

Also, depending on your lift, you might consider a double cardan shaft which dramatically reduces or eliminates the radial forces that a normal drive shaft joint experiences (along with vibration) when it is run at an angle. Also, the angle that the front joint is bent should match the angle that the rear joint is bent at on any drive shaft with two joints.

What was the handling like?

After we got out of the steep back country we still had a fair amount of dirt road driving to get back to the highway. On the way in I could hold 100kmh on the dirt road. After losing the full time 4wd the handling changed to typical rwd handling. I had to drop the speed to about 70 or 80kmh over the same roads. Even at this lower speed I was still unintentionally sideways around some of the tighter corners that the full time 4wd didn't even flinch at.

After I got back home I had to wait a couple of days for a replacement front yoke and during this wait I continued to drive the 80. I reckon there was a little understeer initially turning into a corner even on bitumen. If pushed hard it was easy to get oversteer. There is a large off-camber roundabout in town that I can usually take at 55-60kmh. This roundabout I could only take at about 25-30kmh in rwd.

yea, I was noticing oversteer on the freeway. Probably becasue it's setup for full time 4WD and the power transfer was different.

Like I said (and others are saying) it wasn't bad... just different
