OK, was under there yesterday to have a peek at the exhaust manifold (no crack in the V that I could tell, btw). Checked the driveshaft too, and saw something odd. IIRC it was the front one.

The end of the shaft that gets skinny with the sliding yoke (?) affair, well it has grease coming out the very end, of course, which is good. But then I saw an oily/greasy area at the end of the skinny neck towards the main body of the shaft too. Like a ring of oil. Seems like there may be a seam there where the skinny neck is tacked on the main body maybe? Anyway, is it normal that grease would come out of there or is there an indication of something happening, like too much grease or the seam getting loose and unraveling or something like that? Didn't notice this before.

Been careful not to overgrease the yoke.

I am having a hard time picturing where you are talking about. Got a pic?

It sounds like to me that the tube that covers the splines is coming apart from the main driveshaft tube. I had this happen to one of mine. Basically that is just a sleeve covering the spline so it shouldn't matter as it isn't a strength issue. However, Mine became so loose that the driveshaft was unbalanced. So now that is my wheeling driveshaft.

ahah! so there are 2 separate parts then on the shaft end, a main splined receptacle for the yoke that is welded to main shaft tube, and then a "cover tube" on top of the former that is just slipped on? is this to hold some sort of seal at the end?

sounds like that could be it... what did you do to yours?

That sleeve is held onto the drive shaft by a very snug tight fit. I'm suprised that yours would be sliding off... as I had to beat the ever-living-snot out of it to get it off when I was cleaning the old grease out of my drive shaft. Basically this sleeve contains the grease that works through the male and female splines (for lack of a better explaination) that are on the yoke and driveshaft respectively. There's a strip of felt on the inner lip towards the yoke side the forms a fairly tight seal around the yoke to prevent excessive grease from working it's way up and past the outside of the yoke.

Thoroughly confused yet?

no, that makes sense. Just didn't know this thing is there. Explains the seam. Seems like I'm not in any danger of damage besides losing a bit of grease...

Anybody else?

I think we need some pics.

Yeah hard to tell what you're talking about...

Only picture I could easily find online of a FZJ80 front driveshaft...so where is the oil/grease?

look at the lower shaft on the pic. Follow the big fat body to the right. It narrows to a thinner neck. About a 1/2" or so to the right of the step down you can see a seam. That must be where the "neck cover" abuts the neck. Probably the same on the OEM. That's where I saw some grease. Must be that the "cover" is getting a tad looser?

this circled sleeve is common to all Cruiser shafts....it's there to protect the spline themselves from contact with obstacles, and to keep debris out and grease in.

On my my FJ40 shafts, I've removed them for weight savings...lol

you may find some careful drift/hammer work will re-snug it.

so this is just a press fit, eh?
