I am putting a 4 spd with 3 spd TC in my ‘71 40.
Need to get front drive shaft lengthened and rear drive shaft shortened.
Received a quote to do that for $1150 from a local driveline company, total for both shafts.

Is that a good price?

Seems high.........for where I am anyway. I bought new shafts from Tom Woods shipped to my door for less than I could get mine re-tubed and balanced. I'd call around.

I had mine done about 2 years ago when I did the same conversion. Was about $550 through a local company.

That's ridiculously priced. Just post a want ad here on ih8mud for some authentic 4 speed shafts. When you get them, switch out the ends with your 3 speed ones so you don't need to get change out your 3 speed parking brake drum (unless you want the 4 speed parking brake instead, which you will need to buy separately ). Don't forget to buy the pinon flange adapters for your 2 diffs. You can get them from cruiser outfitters. All of that for way cheaper than what you were quoted to change your current drive shaft lengths. You can also change out the end of the front 4 speed drive shaft with th 3 speed one as well for the part that mates up with the front of your transfer case. So really you only need 2 of those flanges.

Thanks for the feedback.
I will see if I can pick up some 4 spd drive shafts.
If not, will go the Tom Woods route.

Measure what you need and let me know. I just removed mine from my ‘67 that I had converted from a 3 speed to a 4 speed with 3 speed transfer case. Exactly what you did. You can have them for $300.

I need 21” rear, 29.5” front
Flange to flange

You will need to check your out put flange on the back side of the transfer case to assure that you have the correct size also

Just chiming in so you can reference the cost

Tom Woods brand new Drive shaft with new u-joints and both new pinion flanges…$400

It is the 3 spd TC parking brake drum flange

There were at least two versions of flange patterns on the three speed. My 9/67 68 model has an earlier style than those used up to the four speed
Shows 3/69-1/74 in the US with a three speed as the same. believe it changed earlier than 3/69. Toyota just doesn't support anything before that date.

Mine are 29 3/4” front and 22” rear

The rear bolted to the parking brake drum and the pinion. 1967 vintage.

Forgot to say it’s sitting on a 4” OME suspension so they may be a bit long. They were measured fully compressed.

Would like to second the above regarding Tom Wood’s 4x Driveshaft. Just under $1000 for both, double Cardan on the rear and skinny up front. Even turned my parking brake drum down to accept the larger flange on the double Cardan. If you go that route make sure you send them the parking brake drum (conventional flange fits fine).

Installed 10mm studs too. All that for no charge. Great customer service.

Thank you for the detail.
No lift on mine.
Good info on how much length would be needed for a 4” lift.

I paid $350 for a new rear drive shaft for my 43 . Driveline Service in Monroe, NC. Might be worth the trip to it.
