Some kind soul replaced the JIS (+) screws on one of mine with black oxide coated FH SHCS. And Loctited them in. I'm leaving them for the next owner.

FWIW, those black oxide fasteners were designed for industrial machine use, not automotive use. They should never be used for permanent repairs on a truck

Try and tap the threads first, if that doesn’t work you will have to drill and tap the next size up. not sure you have enough room for a helicoil. The screws are M6x1.0 pitch I would buy a tap and try that first you would be surprised what a tap will clean up. Looks like you still have some threads back in there.

Haven't done it but couldn't a bottoming tap could add a couple threads.

Followed the advice here and tapped the threads and got a few good turns getting the M6 bolt to bite. I went to Ace HW and bought M6 X 1.0 in 15mm length with Allen key heads. Although there’s no torque values from my research, I applied 7NM (~5ft lbs) to each bolt to ensure uniformity and a small amount of light threadlock on the compromised threaded bolt. The bolt hole depth is just over 15mm but seems different per hole. If it hadnt held, I was going to tap with a 1/4 SAE to save as much of the block as possible. Fortunately I didn’t have to do that.

Looks like you got it fixed. Good deal!

For others who see this in the future... If you have to drill the heads on these get a left handed drill bit. The bolts are not normally that tight and the heat added by drilling will help release the bolt and the bite of the drill, along with the counterclockwise rotation, will just pull it right out.

The are not phillips screws, they are JIS.

if you use a philips bit, you're much more likely to destroy the screws.

A well fitted bit, and an impact driver from the get go, you should be good.

Use the wrong tool, all bets are off
Yes, I ordered two JIS “Phillips” and punched them lightly with a hammer before hitting them with an impact. 6 of the 7 came off easily but this one.

'JIS Phillips' is not a thing. Just saying.

Also, not saying this is your case, but I've seen tools advertised as JIS Phillips that are clearly phillips. The difference is subtle, but IFYKYK

Looks like you got a decent result with your repair so, I guess the semantics are moot. 👍

Hmm, wonder if I got the bad heads. The real problem was the dumbass behind the extractor when the head stripped out. Be careful folks, these screws are really soft, my drill went througn them real quick.
