Drawer, water storage, and shower questions?

Good to know. Have you had any issues with leaks? How are the quick connects holding up? Will the female end leak when nothing is connected (if pressurized)?

The brass quick connects hold up well as long it is kept clean of grits. No leaks.

Got started over the weekend. I went with Hoser's idea and made two drawers and a storage bin in the front for the water tank. I will be putting wings on the sides and covering with something (probably carpet). I ordered the heat exchanger from cruiser outfitters and all of the fittings from mcmaster carr. It wasnt cheap. Will begin plumbing next weekend. Here is the progress so far. Mostly 1/2" ply, some 3/4".

What do you guys think about this stuff for the top of the box?

Nautolex - Decko Dot Marine Vinyl Flooring

Would be very durable and perfect for water resistance. Only drawback is likely its ability to bend. I was hoping to cover the hinges on the wings and front compartment. It doesnt seem like this stuff would bend very well, might eventually come unglued. Other thoughts are carpet, faux leather, or a mix of the two. Thoughts?

LSUfj, that flooring looks good too. What kind of edging will you use with it? I had also thought about waterproofing the water storage bin with something like that PVC shower liner stuff. In case the tank sprung a leak, it would still retain the water. Not quite decided on what material though.

Exactly what I had been thinking. I made a shower pan once out of that stuff, its kind of bulky in the corners where it would have to be folded. Could possibly put a drain line in the bottom, running outside the vehicle.

Not sure what kind of edgine to use. I think if I ended up using the marine flooring stuff, I would have to put some kind of edging everywhere, including the lid to the water tank compartment and wings.

I would not put a drain. That way, if the tank did leak, the water would be collected and could still be used. Now the question is, finding liner material that will keep the water safe for human consumption.

I think it might look busy with all that edging unless the edging and the flooring were the same color.

Agreed. I would not use it if I couldnt use one continuous peice over the top. Apparently Cabela's stocks this stuff. I'll check it out and report back whether it will be useful. Sure would make a great surface for cleanup purposes.

Why not heavy visqueen?
It may have a bit of plastic taste and you wouldn't want to drink stored in it long term. I assume once you know you have a problem with your water supply you will be making tracks back to civilization anyway.

Yeah, I think visqueen could work as long as the tank doesn't rub through it over time. Good low cost solution.

I really don't see you having any leaks if you secure the tank. Go to the RV store and take a look at the water tanks in a couple of trailers. They are usually under the dinette seats or fixed bed. RV manufacturers use plastic strapping, the same stuff used for freight, and heavy staples to secure the tanks in trailers and such.
I'd use the same method except double the number of straps and use nylon web similar to the type used for pack straps. You can get that stuff at the fabric store.

update

Finished the build before my trip to Colorado. Installed the water tank, helton HX, and pump. Worked pretty well. I had recirculate the water to get it hot enough. Might rethink my valve set up. Here are a couple pics.

First shows where I ran the hose from the tank. It goes out and below to the frame. Basically followed the brake lines all the way to the engine bay. Second pic is of the box. I used some rubber pull-handles from McMaster Carr. Came out pretty good. The covering is the deco dot marine floor. I works well for carrying wet stuff and cleans up easily, but it doesnt hide imperfections of the surface below. I did my best to smooth everything out before covering using wood filler. I will provide more details if anyone is interested.

Bravo, that looks great! Any detailed pictures of the compartments open including the water tank and sides? Is the jack easy to access?

Dammmn...this setup looks like OEM from Toyata...color matching..round corners....Woww...congrats

Could you pls post few hundreds of pictures of the setup:D

Great job

Ditto, Great job. I might have to re-think my simple drawer plan - looks fantastic

I'd like to see a pic from the side, I'm wondering if you could put a platform on top of the seats to make a continuous platform for sleeping and such. You could always sleep with your head at the tailgate I suppose if that weren't feasible.

Wow that is impressive work!
