A quick tutorial with a pic or two of where and what needs to be adjusted would be greatly appreciated.

1988 FJ62 stock sized wheels and tires with too much play in the steering.

Thanks.

Play in the steering can be several things:

relay rod ends: there is an adjustment screw in the end of each relay rod. You can tighten the screw or if you need more adjustment, remove the screw and put a coin (I think a nickel works) on top of the spring. See this post: https://forum.ih8mud.com/showpost.php?p=3662086&postcount=5

Ball Joints: no adjustment possible. If they are too loose, you need to replace them.

Steering box: there is a freeplay adjustment screw on the top of the box. Loosen the lock nut and tighten (clockwise) the screw a little, then tighten the lock nut while holding the screw. Test freeplay and repeat if necessary.

Typically a penny is used in Land Cruiser drag link ends. I adjusted mine, and they were both so loose that my steering wheel is no longer centered, but doing the links and the steering box really tightened up the front end.

I will find a way to recenter the steering wheel, eventually.

Eventually: jackstand the front end & wheels straight ahead. loosen clamps @ tie rod... turn tie rod with pipe wrench or vise grips to achieve "straight" steering wheel. tighten and cruise.

Cheers
