The car was running a sluggish and loud so I decided to try a valve adjustment for the first time. That seemed to go well so I figured I’d try to tune the carb while I had the air cleaner cover off. I was trying the lean idle drop method that has been posted about a lot on this forum. I closed the mixture adjusting screw and then opened it 1 and 1/2 turns. I then mistakenly started messing with the fast idle screw instead of the idle speed adjusting screw. I wanted to try to get a steady idle. Now, the car will start up very rough for a few seconds and die. I can’t get it to start up again and idle. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I might have done wrong?

You could have an unrelated issues. Check fuel level in the sight glass (side of carburetor), and fuel filter, pump, etc. If no results, then follow the FSM again to set the carb screws as Toyota intended.

make sure you reconnected the PCV hose. If its not connected it creates a massive vacuum leak - engine will hate it

I forgot to mention I also replaced the fuel pump with a new OEM one. I checked the sight glass and there is nothing in there. The fuel filter is half fuel though, so I’m guessing the issue is somewhere between the filter and the carb. Thanks for the tip. I’ll check the FSM.

Make sure you have the fuel pump spacer installed. Also verify you don’t have the fuel lines mixed up. Starting and dying just sounds like lack of fuel.

I definitely replaced the spacer and gaskets. Can you let me know if the description of the fuel line order is correct in this previous thread? I relied on it when I reconnected the lines.
