Right, but my point being, when people hear “I drive a Land Cruiser” they now think, “oh that 4 cylinder rolling disappointment that are a dime a dozen”?

Do you legitimately go around announcing “I drive a Land Cruiser”??

Follow up question, do you really care what people say back? Scratch that, I’m pretty sure I have that one answered. We simply operate in two different realms.

I hover in a pretty Land Cruiser forward environment. I’m often introduced to friends of friends as “this is my pal Kurt, he’s into Land Cruisers…” or often someone comments on a Land Cruiser related hat, hoodie, shirt or shoe I’m wearing… often with a “love those old things”, “my hunting buddy had one”, or “I learned to drive in a Land Cruiser, wish I never sold it”. To date, not a single human has even made even the slightest comment or assumption that my interest in Land Cruisers it centered on model that’s been out less than a year. Quite the opposite.

I fear spending time around the people in your sphere. Mankind is not looking down at Land Cruiser owners because of the LC250. They may be looking down on those proclaiming they are a “Real” Land Cruiser owner when being asked what dressing they want on their salad.


Where they used to think, “Oh, one of the most overbuilt cars on the road? Those things are legendary!”

That’s what Toyota did to the Land Cruiser name by only offering the light duty Prado as an option.

I think you are upset that you confused the 250 as direct 200 replacement, somehow assuming Toyota found a way to make the next HD wagon LC with smaller chassis/drivetrain and $30k discount. This does not mean the sky is falling on the LC community and LC owners are not shunned by Joe Q. Public lol 😂
 
Unless 250 sales really are cannibalizing pre-owned 200 sales. If that's the case I'd say those buyers are in for a rude awakening. Maybe prices rebound later on 200s? I really don't care. I'll have mine forever.
It matters if you get in a wreck and insurance pays out less on a depreciated vehicle.

Your whole argument is dismantled when in 20 years, if Toyota keeps on only selling Prado 250’s here in the States, that you may as well rename the Land Cruiser museum to the 4Runner museum.

No, the 250 is not going to be a long term special rig. People won’t look back 20 years from now and say they were anything special “and wish they never sold it”. In fact, dumping the 250 was one of the best decisions I have made.

Many people cared about Land Cruisers here in the States because they were top dogs with little compromises. The name was legendary and unique. I’m surprised to hear how little you care about that.

nah not yet but we can always be in touch. my 2,100 fj60 or my 9,197 mile fj62 are likely more valuable in current market

we bought 5 when local dealer principal who is my neighbor, couldnt move them

wife dd one. 2 sold in bat. one stays in our montana property (4700 miles), and delivery mile one in storage
 
So take a 2016 Land Cruiser. KBB says it dropped $10,297 in 2024.

2016 LX 570 for comparison, shows it dropped $6,307 in value in 2024.

These are average numbers, but the spread between used LC and LX values are coming closer together each day a 250 is sold.

LC had a price premium because the name meant something. It doesn’t anymore. If anything, I see the LX holding its value better because Toyota didn’t cash out on the name.

I didn’t even know KBB was still a relevant thing. But let’s look at your proverbial 2016 LX vs 2016 URJ200 and the LC’s plummet.

Assuming 150k miles, good condition, standard offering specs.
LX private party value according to KBB, $35,894
LC private party value according to KBB, $31,737

MSRP for the LX, $96,905, It’s held 37% of value.
MSRP for the LC, $84,820. It’s held 37% of value.

So your accurate, their pricing is converging. But I don’t know why that is a surprise. We saw the same thing with the LX470 vs UZJ100. Higher initial price on the LX, eventually they converge at $0 :D

In all seriousness, no, I don’t go around announcing “I drive a Land Cruiser”. But if someone asks, then it is a nice perk to have something unique to talk about.

Is that seriously something that’s wrong? I’m not saying I’m better than someone else, but it is nice to have something unique and interesting to chat about (which the 250 won’t be).

I’m struggling to understand many assertions you are making. We have faaaar more Land Cruisers from outside the US then from the US market. We have 100+ in the greater collection (some off site and en route), one single 250. We have just two collection Land Cruisers that were built in the last decade. If you think 200 owners make up the lions share of of our visitors, you’d mistaken. Hell, many guests see the 200’s and ask why we have a Sequoia in the building or are legitimately shocked to hear Toyota still offered a Land Cruiser in the US market from 2008-2021. (Seriously, that came up on many tours I gave when the 200 was still readily available new at dealers nationwide). To be fair, many Cruiserheads draw the line for “real Land Cruisers” at non-removable tops, EFI, full-time 4WD, coils, IFS, V8’s and electric shift t-cases.

The 250 won’t have any negative impact on the LCHM or our mission imo. I hope the trend continues to show quite the opposite, it put Land Cruisers back on the map for many gentiles. We will continue to curate and collect unique and relevant Land Cruiser derivatives from around the world. We will still have zero 4Runners in the LCHM In 20 years.

Ha! You need not lecture me on the legendary namesake, I’m quite well versed and it’s fairly documented accordingly. Do I announce “I own a Land Cruiser” when I enter a crowd? Ridiculous. They are legendary to me for the people I’ve met through them, the races we’ve won and lost, the places they’ve taken me and brought me home, the borders I’ve crossed behind the wheel, the epic field repairs, etc.

It’s overly dramatic to think the LC250 makes 67 years of LC’s in the US less legendary. Perhaps lead with “I drive non-LC250 Land Cruiser”? Maybe that will solve your problem.

Legendary you say. Remember I’m not the one that assumed the $30k cheaper 4 cylinder 250 was a direct replacement for a 200. Rather I stocked up older Cruisers ;) I’ll stick to giving the tours. I’d love to give you a personal tour if you’ve never been, seriously.

Sorry to digress, but where is this museum? I would love to visit someday.

Wow! What a collection. Very jelly.

It sounds like you prefer to drive an early 200 series over the others. Curious why you like to drive that one over the others?

Absolutely not, and I think the market price for those respective vehicles reflects that. I would be willing to bet that the HE 200 would command a higher price than the new 700h.
 
I’m still irritated by it, and there’s a reason why LC 200 values have been plummeting while LX values have been holding steady. (Yeah I get cars depreciate, but this drop in value was largely due to Toyota selling out the nameplate to the masses. They ripped away the unique factor on these rigs.)

The Land Cruiser doesn’t mean anything special anymore. It’s just a common rebadged 4Runner in the US consumers eyes.

You should go. It shows the breadth and cohesiveness of the design and engineering legacy, which is both impressive and useful context for those of us in the U.S. who've known only a small slice of that legacy first-hand.

It does though. People will compare the large volume, built to a price point that’s full of compromises LC 250 platform, to the previous gen cruisers before it.

That’s fine for some people, but Toyota did the Land Cruiser name a disservice here in the States.

It’s like what Chevy did to the blazer.

In fact, the 4Runner in many ways holds a higher pecking order than the Land Cruiser does now. One example, the bigger rear differential on the 4Runner comes to mind.
 
I agree with many things said above. I disagree with a bunch of other things said above. All of this conundrum could have been avoided if Toyota had done the right thing and called the 250 by its rightful name - PRADO, as opposed to try and trick the US buyers saying this is the "new land cruiser", go buy it, it is BACK!

It is just natural people would start comparing with the 200 - which is the fundamental mistake in all this. They are not in the same category. It is simple like that.

The line saying LC prices are "plummeting" because of the 250 Prado is just wrong. Just yesterday at BAT, a 2021 Base (not a Heritage) with 8kmiles sold for 6 figures. I know BAT is niche and all, but if LC prices were plummeting and the 250 was the hot new cake, there is no way that would have sold for that price.

Which takes me back to the comparison. People paying 6 figures for a 4-year-old 200 are indeed comparing it with the 250 and when you do, the 200 value is glaringly in your face.
