Don't drive on old tires... (long read)

Reasons I could not vote for Randy88Fj62's version of the story and my concerns about the version:
Old tires failure. OK, is it possible he was late for picking up the GF at the airport and created this elaborate story to cover his ars?
Picking up GF at the airport, so, tell us about the GF, please tell us she was not a parcel post delivery and is she inflatable?
Speeding down the interstate in the fast lane in a 20+ year old landcruiser (sorry, that's a call to ripley, do you really think he would believe it?)
He owns a 62; a 62 is an 80 wannbe, no shame in wanting an 80 but the 62 looks like it ran headfirst into a chevy van and kept the headlights. Next thing you know, he'll want cup holders.
But hey, I'm on the east coast, so what would I know . . . .

I have not encountered you here on the board. You must be from the 80's section or chat (most of us know there is little difference between those two sub-forums.) My 62 is very capable of doing 70 mph in the fast lane due to the fact that in L.A. we are close to sea level and it is relatively flat.

To answer your second question about blow up dolls and such I think a picture would be best in this situation. Does your significant other go offroading, camping, and pose on your truck for you?

That's what I thought. You may resume drinking your latte and bantering in tech sections. Seems like NLXTACY brings chat to all of the threads he repsponds to.

Oh, and to set the record straight, I wasn't late when I picked her up at the airport. I changed the first flat tire in 10 mins and was 5 mins early. Booya.

I've been on the board far more than normal this week. I don't post a lot because I don't have a lot of time and typically not here on a regular basis but we're out on spring break so I had a few minutes this week. But I have to say, 70mph and the fast lane are incompatable phrases at least on this side of the Mississippi! And the square headlight thing on the 62, well there's a yuk factor I can't get past. That said, as to the GF, if you had posted that pic first, I better understand your haste and I'd have voted for you bud!

60's came with a cup holder attached to the center console. It probably was the only 1980's production vehicle with a cup holder. Then my 60 got a cupholder mod back in 1989. It is called a girlfrienfd (now my wife). Randy, cute girlfriend, does she know how to wrench? Maybe she could help you speed up your SOA conversion.

Joey, I bet my 60 could go anywhere your Lexus/Landcruiser 80 could go. I know it does not stall on hills or have catastrophic brake failure issues. In addition, it did not need any kind of 7 pin mod for it to kick ass either.

I'm sitting at LAX waiting to go spend my week with Mot (if you know what I mean.) I wanted to say that I will post pics of the ripped sidewall tire when I get back in a week if Joey is busy. The blow out was unusual and shows that old tires are dangerous. Gotta have a point to the thread and that is safety.

I've learned how to check dates on tires now and that will also be usefull in the future should I ever want to buy used tires off craigslist.

I'm going about that far in my BJ60 from Guatemala to at least Portland, OR on old tires!

I'm NOT planning on hanging out in the fast lane at 80 mph though .

Randy I think there is a fine line here. Driving on old tires is one thing. Driving on old tires at a high rate of speed is something entirely different.

That's the way I look at it. Besides a 'Cruiser is hardly a vehicle for cruising the Interstate anyways! How many mud terrains or all terrains are speed rated?

Acording to the date code, my 39.5" Irocs will be 4 years old when I drive them to Alaska. My spare will be newer.

exactly! It takes so long to reach 70 that when I even get close, I'm already at the bottom of the hill... So i just keep her steady at 58 mph....
