I have purchaced a map gas and oxygen kit primarly for heating up bolts on customers cars beofore loosing them but, on the same token, I am also using it to weld some thin guage steel togher using welding rods.

I want to knowif the surface has to be absolutly free of paint and also, is a bare brass rod okay to weld with or a rod with white flux? What is the maximum gap that I can fill in with brazing material?

Thanks

Clean metal, good flux and don't over heat it and burn the flux. Heat it evenly just until the bronze flows and you are good. It you burn it and the bronze won't flow, let it cool and clean it again and start over.

easy enough. Can you push the bronze into areas where there is a little void? also, how strong is a brazed weld vs a mig weld?

If this is a concern and you mentioned "customers cars" above then please dont braze anything on a costumers car that you should be mig welding.

If you are worried about it being migged then I really dont think you are going to produce strong enough brazes to replace a mig weld.

Brazing is not very hard but it takes allot of practice and experience to do it confidently.

Brass is not a super strong metal, therefore if the fit of the brazed joints are not a tight fit then all you are trusting is the brass in the gaps.

stop beating around the bush and tell us what you are trying to repair with brass?

Not repairing. Just fabricating

Just for my truck and not to support anything. Just doing some fab work ie, tool cage to keep thieves out :)

Brazing is plenty strong in the appropriate applicaton, but it is not a substitute for welding where it needs to be as strong as steel. I brazed one of the mounting ears on my exhaust manifold tht busted off and it torqued up fine and lasted for at least 12 years.
