So, what I'd like to find is a mid wheel base ( ~115in (3,000 mm)) 70 series with
1. Coil sprung, linked suspension front and rear.
2. 9.5" Axles F/R with rear full floater and RDBs.
3. 1HD-FT(E) or 1VD-FTV
4. Removable top.

All as delivered from the Toyota factory.

Does this vehicle exist or would this need to be a custom built vehicle?

@flx nailed it.

Mid wheel bAse is 102”

The only Toyota turbo factory engine was the 13bt. We shall not speak of the VM.

An Hzj74 is the closest mid wheel base option you get with a removable top. Coil front, smaller front diff, 1HZ non turbo.
Swap in an fte, and coil up the rear. Still you are short 17” of wheelbase.

But at what you are trying to build it’s full custom. An hzj105 series is 112” so you could swap and fte in then custom build a 70 body.

That’s a big removable top on a troopy wheelbase.

EDIT: I see the jeep four-door is 119 inch wheelbase. Is that the look or what you are wanting to go for?

I would like somewhere betwen 100-120" wheel base.
So a LJ or JLU would fit the bill, but I just can't see myself buying a J**p, though I am toying with the idea of 1HD-FT(E) swapping a LJ...

Building my FJ40 into a HDJ-43 would be my dream but I don't have the free time to devote to training and practice to develop the necessary skills to build it, nor is paying Proffits or the FJ Company a reasonable venture.

Finding a HDJ-74 (if it existed) would be a second choice.

There is no HDJ74…..

@bottombracket doesnt count but he does have an hdj74

Hzj74 will get you close but they are pricey. So you could just get a normal bj73 (a VM) model from Spain. Usually clean, left hand drive, and have all the cool soft top things like 1/2 doors and such.

Swap to FTE
Coil link front/rear 9.5” diffs
Rear disc brake swap if wanted.

This is pretty close to what you could build without extending wheelbase.

Custom 4x4: BJ74 LandCruiser - https://www.whichcar.com.au/reviews/custom-4x4s/toyota-bj74-landcruiser-swb-custom-4x4

Coil springs, FTE, discs pretty sweet.

fun tokens are needed for sure

Yeah, I have a homebrew HDJ74.

It started life as a RHD BJ74, and over several iterations of its life, now is LHD, 1HDT/G turbo, front coils, factory a/c, and a soft top conversion.

You have to build something like this or have someone build it for you. Several fun tokens, for sure.

Just get a LJ73 and swap a 1HDT in it and put a hd front clip on it or do what I sm starting soon and shorten up a 80 frame , put a 73 body on it and drop in a ft motor

Then there is also this thing if you want offroad capabilities

@joekatana you KNOW how bad I want that crawler to come live with me. You also know just how bad the timing is right now!

Light duty 70 series have an engine compartment too short for a big 6 cylinder. This would require a lot more modifications.
That is why I mention to swap a HD front clip on it , you can either choose to use the old style narrow nose or the new wide nose

6 is always better the 4 ☺️

I think the 15bft is a great swap candidate in many cases but a ft is still the better option and yes I have driven both .
I just meant in terms of best motor that fits.

Yeah, confirming mostly what I kinda knew already.

I have a rusted out FJ40 that I could build into an HDJ-43 but I have neither the time to build it out, nor the money to pay Proffitts to do it for me.

I want something that I can comfortably drive 80mph for 8 hours, with power for passing on a freeway, and offroad capability for crawling pretty intense lines in Moab. Ability to remove the top and doors is a major point for me, otherwise I'd be on the path to a URJ-200.

I was was hoping that Toyota made the vehicle I am looking for and I'd be willing to pay $30-40k for a nicer one (on par with what an LJ Rubicon will be).

Sounds like they do not.

As you don't mention comfort I would say that a FJ40 is perfectly capable of what you are listing x)

But otherwise in the 70 series if you stick to petrol ones they can also drive 80mph all day long, SWB or MWB for trail agility, removable top or soft top you can get :
- FJ70 soft-top
- FZJ70 soft-top
- FZJ71 soft-top (but not importable in the US i believe)
- FJ73
- FZJ73
- FZJ74 (same not yet importable)
