does the alternator have to be the same?

I want to replace my alternator with one that gives more power so I can operate more electrical stuff.
Why can't I just take one from another vehicle at a junk yard? Are they really that vehicle-specific?

just keep in mind that maybe your alternator come with a vacc pump attached .. and if you replace with another one more powerfull it need to have a vacc pump .. also or you can buy $$$$$ a electric one and ran apart ..

Other option it's adapt a vac pump apart .. just it's a vacc pump isssue if you alternator come from factoyr with vacc pump ..

Of course apart to make a new bracket ..

What does the vac pump do? Is it still that way on modern vehicles?

Its because diesels dont make enough vacuum in the inlet manifold to operate the brake booster,so diesels have vac pumps running off the alternator or the crank and sometimes the cam shaft.
The Toyotas also have a small reservoir to store some vacuum.

Interesting. Thanks

I think you could use any alternator you wanted as long as you can find a way to mount it.

Vacuum pump remote like an electric one. I would look for an internal regulated GM one. Something with 140 ish amps... :) Then you can run an electric vacuum pump and an electric compressor, inverters, fog lights and computers. Oh yah and a big sub woofer.

So, I'm new to this forum. Hopefully this is the right spot for this question. I've got an 83 BJ60, and alternator is toast: I had it checked by an auto electrician. Would I be better off to try to find a reconditioned one (and where would I find one?), buy an alternator kit from 4wheelauto and try to fix mine, or swap for a GM Delco alternator? Mounting it wouldn't be too hard, but wiring it would be. Also, how much vacuum do the brakes need to work, like what sort of electric vacuum pump would I get if I go that route?

I would try the quick fix kit. Either from 4wheelauto etc.

Or get another one from GandScruiser parts. They may take your core and give you a rebuilt one.

They are a vendor on here, http://www.ih8mud.com/ads.php#banners
