Hi,
l am building a HZJ77 expedition rig, does the big end bearing needs to be change like in the HDJ81?
l have done 7 HDJ81 bigend bearings, have seen them from like new to flacking, pitted.
installed a snorkel last week and the ZEAl 3" lift springs from Japan today.

The 1HZ in stock form was never a bearing problem. It has the same bottom end but the lower HP didnt seem to hurt the bearings at all.
There were cases where aftermarket turbos and hard driving killed them.

I had my BEB pulled off at 200000 klms investigating a mysterious tick and they were in perfect condition.

Simon. It is true the connecting rod bearing issue does not makes itself known as often in the naturally aspirated HZ, however...I have seen and know of shops who make a habit of changing out the bearings on the JDM HZ's have seen pitting and signs of delamination of the factory bearings. For the price, and for peace of mind (and if you ever will consider adding a turbo) I would do them. We do them on all HZ's we put through the shop to ensure no issue and make ready for turbo.

If you buy an HZ that is turbo'd already and you don't know if they are changed out it's a no brainer too.

Thanks guys
This leads to the next question,is the rotary injection pump ok for vegi oil conversion?
l am thinking of removing the big muffer to make room for a vegi oil tank under the truck, and move the muffler under the hood, how will the 1HZ standup to Turbocharging??
will turbocharging shorten the life of a 1HZ?

Not enough owners have done it long enough to draw up accurate opinions.
So far ,no one has jumped up and claimed it kills rotary pumps, not with proof anyway.

Only if you dont use it. It certainly wont make it last longer. Toyota designed another engine with lower compression, thicker pistons and direct injection for turbo charging.
You can draw you own conclusions as to why they done that.

Ok you can get a reasonable lifespan by obeying the Pyro and being sensible but nothing is guaranteed ;)

Hi Simon, if you have the truck on the lift then change out the bearings - especially since you have done it before and because it sounds like you are thinking about turbo charging it.

I installed a turbo and intercooler on mine and I love it, no problems yet and I drive it hard. If you really want to find out more info about the longevity of turbos and 1HZ then visit the 4wd monthly and outerlimits4x4.com site from Aus., they have been using turbo's there for a long time and you will see that they get alot of use out of them.

regards.

changed a hzj73 and an hdj81s bearings. the 73s were alot worse then the 81s. i would just do it for peace of mind.

i would recommend changing them out.
talk to Torie Carlson in Canmore about the veggie, he is the guru of that stuf.

sounds like a nice build.

cheers

Can you get better than factory BIB for you Hz if you are going to slam a turbo on it ,do you use factory turbo BIB's or do all turboed 1hz's just chew out BIB

ACL(repco) make an aftermarket bearing with a good reputation,about $50 a set.
I changed my 1HZ bearings at 240000 hoping it would cure a slight ticking(it didnt) but the old bearings were perfect.
The 1HD T and 1HZ use the same bearings

Abused 1HZ with turbos usually get cracked piston heads before the BEBs die.

I suspect if a stock 1HZ gets bearing problems with low klms it may have suffered some abuse, like lack of regular oil changes.
The 1HZ can come out of the mines with 150000-200000 klms and do another 200000 with the same bearings.

Cheers mate
