the old 1FZ-FE had 2 wires in, 2 out ('98 motor) in my hand, 2 wires cut from the old loom. The new connection has 4 wires in. Just foreword of the inlet manifold, behind the distributor. This photo is looking aft. I can get an auto elec to look at it on the weekend if the hive mind here can't solve...

Can you confirm what year models you're working with? 1997 was the last year for 80 series, and the last year for the 1FZ-FE in North America. It continued globally without a distributor after that, but this doesn't sound like what you have.

My '94 has an 8 pin connector in that spot.

When working with wire harness, it's easy to mix up locations. Are you sure that connector doesn't go somewhere else?

ineed it is the '98, last of the !FZ-FE's here. turns out it was a Throttle sensor, wired to 1 x solenoid in the manifold, but 2 x solenoids in the new (earlier) manifold. all solved!
