Hi, I have a standard length fj40 and i'd love a pop-top (as I am in the market for a new top, I thought I should definitely try to find a pop top).

I've seen some pics of the long wheel-base troopies with pop-tops, but not 40s.

I'd love it if you guys could help me out. Thanks!

I've seen a version of a Dormobile top on a German 40 series (may have been a 43) but from my research there is nothing currently available.
This is one case where a low profile roof top tent with good gutter brackets is the easiest solution.
I'm in the prototype phase of a couple of variants of pop top for 70 series Troop Carriers and have been drawing up versions for 60's and 80's. I've been discussing tops with lots of Cruiser owners and it sounds like unless you start with a long wheel base truck the usable space up top is tight. Feel free to PM me if you want to discuss further. I'd be happy to sketch up something that I think would work.

Cheers

Never seen one commercially available. It would be easier to do than on vans... which get them all the time.

The glass roof (aka gutter) could be unbolted from the sides and a lift mechanism with canvas sides could be installed in between. The lift could be installed only increasing the height as little as an inch or two... without being irreversible.

I’d be interested... or could design it for someone who has the resources to develop it. I can picture it now... if could be a hot seller given how Roof Top Tents have taken off.

Exactly. So many rooftop tents and I haven't seen any 40 pop tops.

I've been tinkering with the idea of doing a poptop on the troopy.

There was a company in Australia called Trakka that made the poptop for the troopy's back in the day. I had a chat with them but their mould was destroyed a few years ago so they stopped producing them (last pic)

I've been looking on the net to try and find a company that may do a "kit" or the hinge setup etc but haven't found anyone....did find a few pics of different types of conversions (mostly in Europe).

There is a company over east of Australia called Expedition Centre that were keen on trying the conversion but they want around $10k.

I did have a look at the Alu-Cab company (originally from South Africa) and how they design their roofs and i think the easiest solution is to find a custom fibreglasser to get the roof done.

Id love to know who did the conversion for the 3rd pic (2 troopy's with the pivoting front hinge) and try to get in touch with them.

If anyone has anymore info or can point towards a company ......much appreciated! :)

Ursa Minor in San Diego makes a pop top for JK and JL Wrangler. I like the design

Couldn’t help myself.

I found this...
That looks pretty slick. At 90" would there be some overhang? I only have a soft top and not too sure what the length of a hard top is.

Same brand makes a "condor xl" that folds out sideways and has an exterior length of 74"

Ok serious question. What’s with all the roof top tents?
There's the novelty of popping a tent in seconds, possibly added comfort. Personally I sleep on the ground just fine, but would like to optimize space inside. These hardshell tents are becoming more durable and can be used as racks to load some of your gear too. Yeah they're 3-5 grand, no they aren't necessary, but it can be one of those luxury items that can make your camping trips more enjoyable

Yes I am looking into an Alu Cab Generation 3 Expedition rooftop tent. Spendy and weighs like 194 lbs, but allows for some gear on its hard shell top and some things that can be inside it when closed up as well. The roof nest Falcon is very low profile but does not even allow enough interior space upon closing to put the ladder in there to say anything of pillows or sleeping bags. Anyways need to find a stout rack, thinking a Bowfin will be up to the task if long enough.

Have you looked at the roof nest Condor? Looks a little more roomy for the same price. I still have to find a hardtop for my '74 so I might be thinking too many steps ahead right now

Nice but can’t have anything on the top of it.
