Does $2k to replace an ignition cylinder and housing seem ridiculous? I got this quote from my local Christian Brothers. I expected it to be closer to $500 based on the research I did.

I put my key into the ignition and it turned through the ignition point without anything happening ing. It was obvious the lock cylinder needed to be replaced. I had it towed to the local shop and this is what they came back with. I haven’t asked them why they are charging $1k for the housing, too.

Guessing the ignition cylinder rod has broken, look in the FAQ, you can order the part off Ebay for like $25 and do the install yourself. Regardless of that, their prices for those parts are way inflated.
Thank you!

How much free time do you have? It's up to almost 700 posts.

I just talked to the shop. They said that the base of the housing broke, not the rod. They told me that Lexus told them they can’t replace just the housing but have to replace the housing and the cylinder. I’m calling Toyota to confirm that last statement and to get all quote from them

Ask for a photo of said broken housing. That thing is stout, I would be very surprised if you broke a cast aluminum housing rather than the thin rod everyone else breaks.

On the other hand , I guess most of the bill is for new toyota parts, it is a generous wage budget but I do believe it is the future of modern car repairs post 1995 ish. Could hunt around for how much you can get the parts for to start with. Look into doing the job yourself, at least research what is involved. I am a tight a.

You're assuming that their assertion is correct and you should not be so trusting. You need to find out for yourself what actually broke.

yes, well this is the thing about trusting someone else to do a job for you. It's a blind leap of faith. I do all work on my own car, no problem, save heaps, do a better job than money can buy. But the type of car my wife wants and drives makes me want to cry in frustration, so I simply have 'let go' and trust the cosmos for that one. At least I think you are still ahead that it is toyota.
I have worked in pro indie shops, and things are rushed, running a business in cars is not easy. Different from working on your own love job. A mechanic shall not love your car like you would.

Haha they just sent me a picture of the broken “housing” …

Now, given a dealership doesn't have just the rod in their parts system, they would have to get the whole housing. Just the rod alone is an aftermarket only thing. But, still, their prices are WAY over.

I question whether housing is the right term. Remember they wanted $1028 for a "housing", should be a lot less than that. I believe to get that rod from Toyota you would have to buy an "upper bracket assembly", part number 45280-60610, and then take out the rod and just install that. Impex is only $125 for that assembly, plus shipping from Japan of course, Partsouq a bit higher but certainly faster.
