Dobinsons mra suspension on 2021

So far I have owned three different trucks with BP-51’s. I sold one of them to @spazzyfry123. The other was converted to King. The third was sold and replaced with this truck.
Well that kind of makes me think twice about purchasing a 200 with equipped Bp-51. I know Dobisons are supposed to be pretty good. How do they ride over bumps at slow speed and high speed?

The ride is excellent. I’m not sure if I would pass on a nice truck just because it had BP51’s because good trucks are hard to find.

I just put 1200 off road miles on my MRR equipped 200. I really worked it running a hard pace most of the time. I never once maxed it out even running up on washouts at 30 I should have been creeping over.

They are legit.

What were your issues with them. I probably wouldn’t put much into the concern but you’ve had three of them. My last setup was a Stage 6 ICON 3.0 and it was pretty great. However, no doubt I would have issues at some point as they aren’t known to be the most reliable systems. I have zero experience with Bp-51 however. If you wouldn’t mind sharing some of your experience, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks 😊

So actually I had four sets. Two on 80 series and two on 200 series. I sold one of the 80’s to @spazzyfry123 and I think he has had good luck. The set on my other 80 had a leaking shock that had to be replaced after a couple thousand miles. Those shocks were replaced with King’s. The first set I had on a 200 series had two different shocks start leaking and required warranty replacement. I only had that one for about 10,000 miles before I sold and got a 2020. Installed BP51’s on the 2020 and did not have any issues other than some squeaks that the next owner sorted out I think. I had that truck for about 13,000 miles with BP51’s. The new truck is the subject of this thread and it has the Dobinson MRR. They are very stout and like them a lot. Holding one of each, the Dobinson seem like better quality but that’s just my opinion.

I also have King’s on my 80 series and have ordered another set of King’s for my 79 series.

Thanks for the explanation. I’ll definitely sleep on it as finding well equipped 200 in excellent shape is a win

Mine (OME BP-51) have been holding up well. I do have my grievances, but minimal in comparison to benefit. Keep in mind mine are on an 80 and different in overall construction to that of a 200.

I like the adjustability factor, but I am quite frankly lazy and the feature is lost on me out of the sheer difficulty to actually adjust. Each time will require a proprietary wrench, strap wrench, strength, and a roll in the dirt.

The ride is great once you get it dialed. I've noticed relatively minimal swings in weight result in the requirement to adjust, however. I have a drawer system that will vary from effectively empty to adding a couple hundred pounds of tools and camp gear.

I am also running OME springs that may be adding to some of my questionable ride quality - but let's get real; I'm in a rapidly-approaching 30 year old farm truck on solid axles and 315 mud terrain E-rated tires. MUCH of this will be lost on a 200 between its coilover design and independent front suspension.

Overall, BP-51 has a proven track record here on the forums for the 200 community and I don't think anyone should be reading too far between the lines to determine an extreme such as not purchasing a vehicle because it has them and a neck beard built a spreadsheet saying so. They're significantly better than stock and the 99% would be ecstatic to have them.

That said, I may be beating up @jomelo to score me a set of these Dobinsons for my wife's 200. Pimp levels are high.

You can tune low speed compression and high speed compression independently so you can dial it in we’re it’s like butter over everything

How would you compare this vs. a stock suspension? I'd be using this mainly for family travel / road & wonder if it would be better to just do some airbags from airbag man & leave good enough alone.

It outrides it

@Ozark cruiser wish you installed the MRA on my truck which has a horrid rake, even with 12.5 LRA. I'm using this thread as a guide to order new ones. Would you change the recco for front springs from C59-544 if I'm looking to put in a winch with factory bumper and twin air compressor? No front bumpers.

What springs do you have in rear

I run the 1” rear. Sits perfect. Level when fully loaded. A little up empty

I have 540/535 combo with stock weight and ended up significant rake. Rear was a lot more than the advertised 1.5”.

Half serious Q: what kind of long travel magic allows these Kamaz trucks to do 30 foot jumps?

Was wondering what the bounds of the Dobinsons and similar setups are? Can we do speed bumps at speed? 90 degree turns at 60mph? Remember those were selling pounds for a built Jeep wrangler at a local showroom

@Ozark cruiser, I know it's been a long time since you did this. Do you remember if there was a left/right order to the rear coil springs?

Also, how hard is it to turn the adjuster knobs of the front struts with fingers and how many turns can you turn them? mine is very very tight and almost impossible to turn without pliers, and I can't turn them more than 5 clicks or so.
