I saw a write-up on LCool, which includes a cable from the dome light to the map lights, and a diode for each map light. Both the dome and maps are ground switched. That way the map lights will always come on with dome, and can also be switched on individually. There is also a warning to do this only with LEDs (lower power draw) in order not to fry the dome output of the Body Control Module. For running the cable, take down both handles on one side in addition to the lamps.

This is a project I am going to try to figure out soon. Added problem is that my middle seat roof light is in an overhead DVD player....

im in the same situation, and very curious to know if you got the map lights to work as dome lights
Been wanting to pull down the roof liner to do this mod. It’s actually simple; unplug the source of the map lights, feed a new supply wire coming from the dome light “Door” pin. So when the four doors are open, map lights are also ON (considering the switch is ON on the map lights). Just don’t have time to do it yet, been riding my mtb recently and find that more fulfilling

Just did something similar, but by adding a LED light right in front of the map lights, tied into the dome light circuit.

I used to have an '03 Sequoia that suffered this same mistep by Toyota - map lights did not come on with the dome/overhead light. This was the fix (yes, i'm posting a link to another forum):
