Is this just a trick question to "force" my 200,000 mile original head gasket to fail tomorrow? :flipoff2:

97' with 153k on the original HG, and so far so good! I did recently replace the radiator with a brass Koyo, flushed the system with Mr. T red coolant, and change the PHH.

I have about 220,000 on my 95 and have the original head gasket BUT my mechanic changed the plugs recently and informed me that my number 6 plug was showing signs that the head gasket was going. I have done much research on this topic and it appears that the 80 series that tend to have this problem are the 95 through 97 models as the original question in your thread implies. These engines were modified to provide more horse power and they apparently changed the head gaskets. These new head gaskets have a tendency to crystalize over time hense the need for the change. I have talked to several people and they told me not to worry about it. Just drive the truck. You will know when you have to replace it because it will begin to burn up coolant (your reservior will empty more frequently) and you engine will begin to run hotter. It is about $2500 to $3000 to get it changed....at least in Dallas and that is at a shop that specializes in Lexus....not an inexpensive endeavor. When mine fails, I will replace it. Outside of this problem, the vehicle is pretty much bullet proof.

245,000 on my 96' with origional HG and still running like it's new.! Last vehicle I ever want to own. This is the finest off-road SUV ever built!
