I am working hard to torque my U-Bolts to 100 Ft-Lb.

I have lost a lockwasher (deformed, and twisted out from between the nut and the plate) at 80 Ft-Lb. I'm wondering if they are supposed to be there.

Thanks

Rocky

ANSWER: Yes they do. Standard Lock Washers

Do you use locktite on em? The nuts I have are very long (twice as long as standard nuts)...

Thanks

Where did you get 100 ft lbs spec?

I think the torque is supposed to be closer to 80 ft lbs for stock type u-bolts.

I would not use lock tight. I would torque then to spec, then drive it for awhile, a few hundred miles, and re-torque. Do this a couple times until you are confident they are staying tight. Then forget about it. The rust will soon keep them more secure than any locktight.

Oh, and if you are using no grade or low grade lock washers, they may be too soft. The u-bolt lock washers I've seen are a bit thicker than a standard lock washer. I've had them deform when loosening the nut because they bite hard into the nut or the u-bolt plate. If they are deforming when tightening, they may be the wrong size or wrong hardness or as mentioned, maybe you are over-torquing
