Not sure if II followed this correctly but if your planning on putting a shorter distributor in place of a slightly longer one watch out. It may seat and operate just fine but what hapens over time is the ring gear pulls down on the distributor shaft and tries to seat it into the gap left in the oil pump head. This wears out the shaft bushing and eventually your distributor craps out.

Ask me how I know :D

I don't think the 2mm difference is a big deal, but then again I'm not building a screaming 2FE. Going back to the first post which shows a 2mm difference between an early 2F distributor and the later 3FE distributor, the 2mm difference could easily be accounted for in the manner in which these lengths were measured. The 3FE has the solid flange which fits solidly against the block when the distributor is fully seated. This length is easily measured. The older 2F distributor on the other hand has the old clamp style hold-down which does not provide a good reference for measurment as it is easily moved when loose. An extra 2mm could easily show up in this measurement if the clamp were loose and pushed upward.

There is a seat on that type of Dizzy just less pronoused the clamp is actually above it. So the mesurments are correct which I think is shown by everyone having the same variation.

I was suprised to find a difference between the early and late 2F's rather than the 2F and 3FE.

I'm just not keen on reducing the contact area by so much.

more measurements

This thread has been focusing on the overall length below the flange base on the distributors. I decided to break down this overall length on a 2F and 3F-E distributor. While I found no differences I'm including these measurements in the event that they may be helpful. Units are mm.

1986 2F 1988 3F-E
Shaft length below gear 55.9 56.0
Gear height 16.1 16.4
Flange base to gear 48.5 48.4
total 120.5 120.8

I agree, though I found the 2F and 3F-E measured from the bottom up were pretty close. The distance from the tip to the drive gear was the same although upside down on the 2F and the gear is exactly the same. Just the distance it seated changed.
