does anyone know of a diy or a step-by-step list of the correct procedure to drop oil pan 1 from a 1fz? I tried a search and came up short. im sure its there somewhere and i am likely overlooking something, or not searching the correct terms. I just dont want to miss anything or make any rookie mistakes getting it off.

i have my front 3rd and ds pulled and that oil pan is just sitting right there begging to be resealed. It has dripped on my several times to remind me it needs done. So i figured now would be a convenient time to tackle it.

Also, how heavy is that thing? will I need a helper to get it back on? and will the old fipg break away easy or am i in for a fight?

If anyone has any advice, it would be much appreciated.

thanks hornd, but that shows the #2 oil pan, im wanting help with the upper one, to reseal the drippy arch seal.

thanks diamondfj... that is exactly what i was looking for.... i had seen this one before but could not find it when i went to look for it. many, many thanks and a 12-pack for you!

Good luck.

@Beej .....oh wow, old tread. I did this about 2 years ago and no leaks since. This was a dirty job, I remember it very well. If I recall, the faq on this was pretty accurate. most time will be spent r&r everything that has to go. The write up from @alia176 pretty much covers it.

I remember making two mistakes on this job:

First was I overlooked the heater inlet behind the valve cover. When I went to raise the engine, it crushed them and I got showered with coolant. no biggie, was going to replace my heater lines anyway. Reshaping the crushed nipple took some TLC.

Second mistake I remember making was not removing the oil level float sensor. I was extra careful not to break it during removal, but when I was cleaning off the old gasket I put too much weight on it and snapped it. I was lucky enough to find one used one for cheap, but they can be very expensive to replace.

also, don't forget to get the little square oring for the oil pickup. the old one will be hard and brittle.

I also broke my oil dipstick tube in the process. I was a little rough with it. But a new one was only $25 from the dealer... (plus the $3 oring of course)

I recall doing that job, then documenting it. It was a PITA job but worth the effort if done right. Congrats!

I don't have the right set up to do this so I took the 80 to my mechanic. He said we probably wouldn't do it! But I provided him with some additional info and he's going to get back to me.

If he won't do it I'll have to buy a tarp and do it in the car port; reeeally not wanting to go that route but with the FAQ I feel like I can get it done.

I don't blame you for not wanting to do the project but the money you save by not going to the mechanic will allow you to buy some tools and other cool junk! It's not a hard project, just a PITA project. I think you'll do a far better job than any mechanic because you care and will take your time. The mechanic doesn't give a rat's ass about your ride so he'll hurry through everything and not clean everything meticulously like you would clean. This FAQ ought to make it straight forward for you, especially if this isn't a DD.

My motto when it comes to projects on our rides is that we do far better job than any mechanics, just not as fast. It's different when you have ownership of the project. This sites debunks lots of projects like these and increases the comfort margin with the harder projects. As always, we're here for answering questions or provide tips/tricks as needed.

I always do this kinda stuff myself but I have no idea how to lower the front axle AND raise the engine. I have about 1.5 inches of lift so thats a little something to lower the axle but I cant raise the truck and then raise the engine because I have to jack on the harmonic balancer to raise the engine.

If someone can tell me how to get the positioning right I'm all over this job. Any assistance is much appreciated.

You know, I didn't lower the front axle but at that time, I had a 3" lift so that might been the reason why. However, to raise any engine, the trick is to use a piece of 2x4 wood under the oil pan, loosen the motor mounts, remove the fan shroud/loosen the radiator fan, then lift the engine! If you don't do the shroud/fan then you'll shove your fan into the shroud, shattering the fan. No bueno.

One way to lower the front axle, if you must go this route, is to raise the front axle, remove the wheels, place jack stands then lower onto jack stands.

Not sure if you read the beginning few pages of my thread but lowering the axle does NOT assist you with gaining more clearance for the lagre oil pan. There is lateral rod that is attached to the chassis rail and it will NOT MOVE with the axle. I show a picture with some arrows going to it for illustration. Just a FYI.

Edit: look at post #23 in my FAQ thread for the pic
