Did a search. Some talk years back nothing seems to have been done???? I don’t want to pay 1.5k for a drop in and the other options are ok but electronic seems a more elegant solution. I’m not building a crawler. Mostly stock 31 or 33s. Need the wife to drive it. So has anyone looked into adapting e steering from a salvage yard ?

I’ve been considering the DIY option as well and this article caught my eye. It’s toyota, too.

Lead the way... I saw that link this morning. Im going to do some more research. The prices for these setups at the salvage yards seem worth giving it a try. Even if I have 50% improved steering It would probably be sufficient. Someone must have tried it???? Come on guys I know not everyone here has gorilla arms.. fess up.

Here you go:

I installed one in my 55 with parts from the junkyard.

Thanks Abqcruiser. I figured someone here had already executed this. Going to read up

Several of us have done it and many more have bought the bolt in version.
I am currently on my second build of one. Actually welding on the tubes today.
Will have it wrapped up in another couple days.
That thread above has about all the info you need. Any questions feel free to ask.

Thanks Shark56. Did you source the parts yourself? I’m inclined to go this route and save the funds for other mods. The columns seem relatively inexpensive and not too much work to adapt. Have pics / info on your install? Same as the links?

I forgot to mention I’m trying to go the route of Toyota EPS. Which Does not require an ECU and is supposedly a 3 wire hookup. Prius and corolla both had EPS. I’m not worried about ultra robust as this is a dd and not going to be bashing it. I have 2 80s for that. I’ll probably grab the intermediate shaft and see if I can keep mods on the engine side of column.

Pretty much did the same as the OP on the link for DIY electric power steering. I sourced the parts myself using the info provided in the link. KOYO unit off Ebay.
I have had my original version almost three years. I have driven it thousands of miles. I have also wheeled it some, offroad at Rausch Creek in P.A., on the beach, and in some mud, snow here in Delaware.
The first year the only issue was blowing the main fuse for the unit when trying to turn in rocks.
Upped the fuse to a 40 amp and solved that problem. On a trip last year the unit would rotate a little in the dash bracket. Did not affect performance. Found a loose clamp. On my newest version I am welding the clamp as someone did in the original post.
For every day driving its probably not needed but I do a little mild wheeling so I'm going on the safe side. One benefit of this type set up is if for some reason the motor would fail. You are back to regular manual steering. The other benefit is there is no frame modifications.

And as a follow up. This is not hard to do but does require some skills such as fabricating, welding and minor electrical skills.
I have the time to do it myself. With that said, if someone wanted me to build one for them it would be all at $2000. The unit from Cityracer is a great option.

Yes I saw the option from cityracer but feel that’s a huge jump. I paid $140 for all the parts. The fab work doesn’t seem that complicated and the price tag of 2k puts you in the area of an oem powersteering. I’d rather throw funds into something else. Thanks for all the info everyone.
