EDIT: .STL file posted here

Another thread got me thinking and then tinkering with a custom 3D printed cup holder. I already have the BH3D LX570 insert. But I want more functionality. I imagine others may want this too. Goal is to share my CAD file and start an open source project that others can take further. I'm sure there's lots of good ideas out there and this is just a start.

2 main design paths: inserts (180mmx90mm = 16.2 cm sq), or whole cupholder/lid replacement (234mm x 124mm = 31.4 cm sq). I opted for the latter as there's almost 2x more prime real-estate to harvest.

Wants:
- 3" cup holder
- 3.75" water bolter holder (with adjustable stop)
- pen holder
- cell phone holder
- Baofeng radio holder
- misc pocket

I'm about 1.5 hrs in and on iteration v3. Probably will take a few more to get to where I want it. Happy to share the file when I'm satisfied.

Are you using ABS?

Yes!!! Any way to fit a hole/grommet at the bottom for a charging cord. Or a way to mount a mag charger

There is a good amount of space under cup holder and under shifter. I’ve put a usb hub there and ran wires out of the center console trim for charging cords.

Currently mocking up with PLA. Will use PETG for the final print to handle potential cabin temps in the summer.

Got button happy. Apologies.

What is the print dimensions?

234mm x 124mm x 63. Large enough that it's time consuming to print (~12hrs). Lots of opportunity to optimize, but I'm printing sections at a time to fit check.

Not a bad idea! Skies the limit and I'm hoping others will come up with some cool variations.

You could even have spots for switches. I bet some guys would love a cup holder on one side and 3 rows of switches on the other. That would also allow for USB ports. Cb/ham radio hand piece port.

Wonder if you could make a spot to insert a lock barrel on it and make it a hidden compartment for personal protection devices 😉

I only ask because my son made me a cool platform for my coffee cup to fit in my BH3D cupholder, and he used PLA and it shrunk in the summer heat. Sounds like you are on top of that. Looks great!

That was quick! Does anyone work on this forum? :)

Ive been thinking about how to fix my QOL issues for a while myself. Good work!

Im not sure on the sub assembly framing, but why not extend out to the trim piece and have a nice pen/flashlight/misc cubby. Upright pens will leak in my climate and you would achieve universal fitment for whatever pen you want.
Transcend the depth limitation by reclaiming some height and have more room in the cup area. The socket panel is push open right? no need to grasp from the side. You could even remove the door and make your own added height door to accommodate closing when the plugs in it and put in a cable raceway into the phone holder.

The charger is great idea, you could mount a qi or a lightning port even to dock iphones if thats what youre family is into. Ive been trying to find out how to get my model years wireless charger retrofitted into my front cubby myself. Its the only option missing on my vehicle. (no clue why)

^Nice CAD work. Soon we might have a library of options. I keep adding little things with each revision while tweaking fit geometries... Added a paper slot to the back. Fun but need to stop.

v7 incorporated a cam adjustment on the larger cup hole to accommodate different sizes. I always hated dinky factory style stops that rely on friction as they are just as soon worthless off-road. Made a multi-position cam type adjuster with positive stops that's hopefully easy to use.

Was working with a crowned top to match the console profile, but not sure I liked the finish which is a bit loud with 3D printing layers showing up prominently. Could always sand and re-finish. Not sure I have the patience for that type of work. Either way, I can already tell this cup holder turned console is going to make a world of difference for me.

What are you designing this in? I am interested in advancing this idea. Keep gathering a list of user needs. You started the list. A wireless charger would be good. I’ve been pondering a solution around the wireless charger near the USB plug on my ‘13. And a swap for the ash trays.

I’ll be picking up an Ender printer soon. I also have solid works and can help with design/build iterations.

This is awesome! Btw I like the idea of a key holder if there’s room, maybe in the corner. Also I have a big OtterBox defender around my iPhone, making it pretty big, I think the thin hole may be too narrow for those with bigger cases on their phones.

V9 printed 17hrs overnight using almost a full spool of filament. Pulled from the printer, ripped the 3D printing scaffolding off while the kids are saying they're going to be late for school, dropped her in and away we go. It's everything I'm looking for! And got the kids to school on time.

Granted, everyone has different needs and there's no way a single solution will satisfy them all. Tying in details like charge cords or 3rd party accessories requires detail work. The void below is not completely open and there's contours and features that need to be built around. In the goal of maximizing space, I did choose to trim a small portion below to accommodate the larger cup hole. Great thing is that there's now a reasonably developed and well fitting sharable plan that can be further customized. What I also don't know is if this fitment will work for similar pre-2016 LCs?

To model this, I used a relatively easy free tool that should be pretty approachable by most. Just dragging around basic geometries - tinkercad.com. I'll share the file later when I get home.

A full spool? You are doing 100% infill?

A full spool? You are doing 100% infill?

5% infill as this is still a test print with PLA. Now I'm remembering that this spool was used partially on the previous print. So prob took about 60% of the spool but I'm eating through filament. Not the cheapest when each spool is ~$20. Time to print is probably the biggest constraint.

It's a large print with scafolding that just overruns my Prusa printer working area.

Final will be in PETG.

If we had a file with the envelope people could cut into as they see fit for all of the configs people can come up with.

Great suggestion and I was considering that. Challenge is that I don't necessarily have the full underneath envelope defined as I didn't start out modeling that. There are odd shapes and obstacles under there. Rather just created compartments where I needed them, to minimize 3D print material overhead. I may still try at some point to do this, perhaps another weekend.
