So I've been chasing a spark issue forever trying to get a 77 2F running. I think I found it today. There is/was a metal "shield" inside the distributor that separated the points from the rotor/cap. It just sat there, not screwed down but when you put the rotor on it stopped it from coming up. I think when I replaced the points last, they must sit higher because when this "shield" was placed down it must be touching the points/wire and it stopped all spark (my light tester lit up when i put the shield on). So the question is, can this be removed with no worries? I tried it and she fired right up but I didn't leave it running.

Thanks!

I guess it helps isolate the high voltage spark from the low switching voltage.

You might get some debris on your points, or a lot of noise on your 12v (in case you run a radio etc), and eventually damage something.

I'd try to get the points back to stock if possible
