Thanks for all the well wishes, comments, and input. I am excited about this new build, the next chapter...

I ordered 200' of tube steel today. :)

That is sweet! That will eliminate some slams coming off of ledges.

Sent from my iPhone using IH8MUD App

Hopefully slamming my fat a$$ on the rocks will be a thing of the past. I did not get too aggressive with how much I removed as I like the look of a little rear end (no pun intended ;)). I cut just behind the gas door latch and right against the edge of the marker light plastic nutcert, this removed 7.5" .

Weekend Progress

Welded on the rear today and trimmed the top and bottom. It's bondo time again and then new liner.

Derrick, you're really going to town on the LX. Let me know if you need a hand with anything, I'm just up the road.

Harley,
I will be working on it tomorrow most of the day and then Mike, 80BajaBound will be stopping by and we are going to install my old 4x4Labs bumper on his rig. Stop on by if like. I will PM you my new cell number.

Derrick

Hey Derrick. Do you still have those grab handle caps lying around? Thanks.

Yes, gotta dig 'em out of my box of parts. I'll try and get them out in the mail this week.

Looking good!
Going to bring it out to the meet and greet?

The windshield is shattered so I am a "fixit ticket" waiting to happen every time I drive it. I won't have it fixed by then but I may just bring it to have a conversation piece. :D

I want your rear bumper! That would go along with my front bumper very nicely.

How hard would it be to replicate that?

This bumper was very easy to fab. First I lopped 8" off of the frame rails and capped them. Then I cut the recovery points out of a scrap piece of 5/8" x 4" steel I had laying around. Cut the shape I wanted, cleaned it up with a grinder, drilled the holes on a drill press, and welded them to the frame rails. What you can't see is the half-moon cradles I ground into the recovery points that support the main 2" tube.

Next, we measured and bent the main tube and lightly tacked it into place. The receiver tube was tacked next with a supporting bar in the back as well. I then popped the 2 tack welds holding the main tube on the recovery points, pulled the bumper off, and fully welded all the joints. A triangular piece of 3/16" plate with 2 holes (for the trailer chains) was then welded on top of the receiver tube up against the main tube. I put the bumper back in place, welded it to the frame rails, and added the 1.5" supporting bars on either side of the receiver tube.

I still have to weld some supporting bars that go from the wings down to the frame, but this will happen later when I tackle the quarter panel protection that will be integrated into this bumper.

A couple more pics and there is more in the build thread I have in 80s tech.

Progress On The Cage

Worked on the cage today and completed the B & C pillar roll bars, welded them to the frame, and got the triangulation support at the roof line. Tough day working in the heat.

Looks like it's really coming along. One thing I did notice however, in photo 3, is your lack of attention to detail. You really need to tighten up that map pocket.......geez man.......! :D

On a serious note:Awesome work!!!
